Re “Thousands hear call for traditional values,” Aug. 29: If I could wish for one thing out of what Glenn Beck and his friends had to say at their rally in Washington, I would wish for specifics. What exactly have we Americans done that we need to “turn back to God”? What values do we need to return to?
Since I was a child, I have tried to live my life with honor and integrity. It isn’t easy, but I know through my Christian upbringing that Jesus set a great example for me to follow. He cared for the sick, reached out to the outcast, and broke bread with prostitutes and the downtrodden. He also told us to love our neighbors. Which is why, as a Christian, I love my Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, agnostic and atheist brothers and sisters. I love my gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender brothers and sisters.
Beck tells me and other Americans that we have turned our backs on God. Hardly. I have worshipped God and continue to do so, working to love all of my neighbors according to Jesus’ teachings. I enjoy and embrace our differences and our similarities. I pray Beck, Sarah Palin and others who think we have “lost our way” see someday that we really have not.
