Wells would be wise not to follow Byars' path

By Marc Pendleton

Staff Writer

Friday, September 12, 2008

From the odds and ends zone:

• Pity Chris "Beanie" Wells.

Ohio State hasn't had such a gimpy go-to Heisman hopeful since Dayton's Keith Byars missed most of his senior year in 1985 with a broken little toe.

Byars snapped his foot pinkie three times that fall.

Wells is the biggest, fastest and most powerful runner in the Buckeyes' backfield since Byars and Eddie George. Here's hoping Wells veers away from following Byars' painful ending.

• Bad break that Oklahoma unloaded a snapped fibula and sprained ankle on University of Cincinnati senior QB Dustin Grutza last week. He's lost for the season, and here's hoping he doesn't pull a Ben Mauk.

Grutza was a redshirt in '04 and has played every season since. That means, like former UC QB Mauk, he would be petitioning for a sixth year of eligibility in '09.

Two words to Grutza and Mauk: Arena football.

• Nice to watch the LPGA whiff on its insistence that foreign players speak English "effectively." Unfortunately, sentiment still lingers for such a thing.

A caller last week insisted we all should "wake up" and stop this foreign "invasion" any way we can. The LPGA, apparently, was his preferred starting point.

• NFL comment likely soon to be overheard at Nashville's LP Field:

"Hey, Vince, sorry I hurt your feelings. I mean, knee."

• So Forbes Magazine insists the Browns are worth $1 billion. I believe that as much as Dayton is dying.

I think.
