You won’t go hungry in August thanks to the INSANE amount of food events

Now through Aug. 5: Preble County Fair

If you haven’t been to a fair in a while, it might be time.

Now through Aug. 5: Greene County Fair

On Wednesday, Aug. 2, bring a non-perishable food item and get in for $3. Your contribution will help food pantries in Greene County. You eat, others eat. It’s a win-win.

Aug. 4: Art In the City

Celebrate Dayton’s rich collection of visual and performing arts during a special event that kicks off the second annual juried art show! Join local businesses, artists, and other organizations as we “paint, perform, and party” around downtown Dayton.

From 6-8 p.m. when you hit one of these participating patios, you’ll be able to take in a live art demo or a musical performance:

Aug. 4-6: Tax-free weekend

This is not so much a food event as a friendly reminder … Once again the State of Ohio is doing a tax-free weekend with no tax on clothing purchases of $75 or less, and school supplies that are $20 or less. I hope you can fit a nice lunch or dinner into your itinerary.

Aug. 5: Lebanon Blues Festival

Hosted by the Lebanon Optimist Club, this event mixes the Blues with some classic BBQ, a beer garden, car show as well as other events.

Aug. 5: Arts and Drafts

This fundraiser for We Care Arts will feature live music, on-site tattooing, food trucks and draft beer. Bonus: free admission.

Aug. 6: Brunch food truck rally

This is exactly as it is billed — a Saturday morning food truck rally from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. I’ve been to several and have really enjoyed them. The trucks have all of your brunch favorites and The “Old” Yellow Cab building has Bloody Mary’s, Mimosas and craft brews for sale. This month’s participating vendors include: The Drunken Waffle, El Meson, The Wicked ‘Wich of Dayton, Son Of a Biscuit, Smokin Barrels, LLC, and The Shakery Juice Bar.

Aug. 8: DVAC’s 2nd Annual CSA Harvest Party

Featuring live R&B oldies from the Old Skool Duo and Brixx Ice Company pizzas, a ticket is just $10 and offers you a chance to check out this year’s “crop” of fresh art by Amy Powell, Danielle Rante, Francis Schanberger, and Andrea Starkey. Original, limited edition, signed and numbered portfolio available for $350 or $650 framed. Party goes from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Aug. 10: Taste of the Greene

This annual tasting event returns. The 11th annual Taste of the Greene will take place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. featuring samples from participating restaurants. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of.

Aug. 11-13: The 34th Annual Dayton Liederkranz-Turner Germanfest Picnic

Now in its 34th year, the Germanfest Picnic is a 3-day celebration of the Miami Valley’s rich German heritage. Enjoy great food, beverages, and the same great Gemütlichkeit (friendliness) that have made it a popular regional festival.

With a billing of “Fine Wine & Cool Jazz,” how can you go wrong?

Aug. 13: 29th Annual Art on the Commons

This one-day juried display and sale of fine arts and fine crafts from over one hundred artists from Ohio and surrounding states is presented by Rosewood Arts Centre and the Kettering Arts Council.

Aug. 18-26: The Great Darke County Fair

This is a Midwest fair at it’s finest. It’s huge, hot, loud and delicious. I urge you to check the calendar and take in a dog show or a mule and donkey show, some horse racing, sheep sheering, wood carvers, or one of the other myriad activities they will be showcasing over the course of the week. There’s always something to grab your attention and the food is one greasy guilty pleasure after another.

Aug. 19-20: Fairborn Sweet Corn Festival

Still going strong 36 years later. This festival puts the spotlight on a favorite summer stable in Ohio: corn. Bring some toothpicks with you — you’ll thank me later.

Aug. 20: Bacon Fest

Because I am a firm believer that everything is better with bacon.

Aug. 21: Solar Eclipse

For the first time in one hundred years, the U.S. will be the prime location world-wide to watch the eclipse occur. This feast for the eyes is natures festival. Mark your calendar now and plan accordingly. The eclipse will start at 1:02 p.m. and will reach 89 percent totality by 2:30, and will be completely over by 4 p.m. … just in time for happy hour.

Aug. 25-27: Greater Dayton Lebanese Festival

Kibbee, Falafel, Kafta, Beef and Chicken Shawarma (“Lebanese gyro”), Tabouli and Salata salads (Middle Eastern Salads), stuffed grape leaves, hummus dip, homemade Middle Eastern mountain bread with zhatar seasoning; and fresh Lebanese pastries including baklawa, ghraybeh, nammuoora. And those are just a few of the delicious reasons this festival, presented by St. Ignatius Of Antioch Maronite Catholic Church is worth considering.
