Some of the best Halloween food and dining deals

Several chain restaurants have figured out how to capitalize on the Halloween craze with kids and families, but the vast majority of restaurants — independents and chains — have yet to do anything upscale or sophisticated for grown-ups that are not in the market for kids meals.

The options to engage the public are as open as the items being served up by the kitchen or the bar … specialty menu items, a special coursed Halloween dinner, spirited specialty cocktails, a weekend bloody, bloody Mary bar, an afternoon pumpkin beer tasting, customer costume contest … and the list goes on. The idea of doing something a little different around All Hallows’ Eve presents an opportunity to get creative, interest new hungry eaters that may not have visited yet and to have some fun in the process.

Seriously, is there a better time to put fava beans on the menu?

Chipotle Mexican Grill's long running Boorito promotion is back Monday running from 3 p.m. to close at all Chipotle locations. Dress in costume and a burrito, bowl, salad or order of tacos can be yours for just $3.

I mention this promotion because it's one of the best I have heard of so far that is themed to the holiday and happening on Monday to honor Halloween unless you are a child 12 or younger and can talk an adult into taking you to an IHOP for the restaurant's "Scary Face Pancakes" promotion offering kids a free pancake that day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. made with strawberries, whipped topping, Mini Oreo cookies and candy corn. Sounds gross, but most kids will be all over it.

“Boorito is a tradition that we started in 2000, to simply give a treat to our customers while celebrating Halloween. It’s gotten to the point that for our long-term customers, we don’t even need to mention Boorito anymore, as they’re coming in anyway knowing they’re going to have a great time enjoying the food they love, all while supporting a good cause (funds raised go to support the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation),” says Mark Crumpacker, chief creative and development officer at Chipotle.

It’s no accident that 16 years later this promotion is going strong. There’s great interest, which is clear when you enter a Chipotle on Halloween and see a line of people in various costumes (some impressive, many last-minute and lame) lining up out the door.

If costuming for half-priced Chipotle’s not your thing, take advantage of one of several great Monday night promotions while everyone else is out shepherding kids or handing out candy. They may not be themed, but you will save money.

A couple to try out if you haven't yet — Oregon Express (336 E. 5th St., Dayton) offers 25 percent off pizza after 5 p.m. for dine in orders on Mondays and from 5-10 p.m. Bullwinkle's Top Hat Bistro (19 N. Main St., Miamisburg) has a $2 burger night on Mondays.

Although it's not really themed to the Halloween, the Mayhem & Mystery Dinner Theatre's "Perilous Pirate Plunder" is happening Monday at 7 p.m. at the Spaghetti Warehouse, 36 West 5th St., Dayton. The production is encouraging pirate attire if you have it laying around the house.

“Join Red Rapscallion and the rest of the cantankerous crew as they search for their missing treasure. Can you solve the mystery before they do?”

Tickets are $25.95 for dinner and the show (tax and gratuity not included), call ahead for reservations.
