Hidden Ohio

Dubbed "Invisible America" decades ago, Appalachia covers a third of Ohio and is home to about 13 percent of the state's population. The region long has struggled with poverty, job loss, isolation and educational disadvantages. In a global society and a state with a stagnant economy, some fear Appalachian Ohio will fall further behind. Others see hope: more education opportunities, new small businesses, better transportation, a pull-itself-up-by-the-bootstraps attitude.
