The Faces of the Victims

A YEAR OF DEATH IN THE MIAMI VALLEY

Throughout 2005 we gathered statistics on homicides in Montgomery, Warren, Miami and Greene counties. For purposes of this survey we defined homicide as an intentional act of force that resulted in the death of another. Vehicular homicides were not included.

What we found

  • The Dayton Daily News has highlighted each homicide victim in the Miami Valley in 2005.
  • Most victims were killed in Montgomery County, home of the region's major urban center, Dayton.
  • Dayton claimed at least 32 of the Miami Valley's 47 homicide victims.
  • These are not the worst of times. Dayton's homicide rate has plummeted since the 1970s, when the city saw more than 100 people slain annually.
  • But as details piled up with each Miami Valley death analyzed, certain trends emerged:
    • Most victims were black males.
    • Most died of a gunshot wound.
    • A lone black male sitting in a vehicle, dead of a gunshot wound, is the typical Dayton homicide victim.
    • More than half of the homicides in Dayton were drug-related.
    • Several in Dayton were killed in apparent retaliation for previous shootings.
    • Most of Kettering's recent homicides have stemmed from domestic violence.
    • Perhaps most disturbing: Many of those killed, or accused in the killings, were linked by family ties to earlier slayings.
