HAMILTON — A 28-year-old man charged with killing his grandfather will undergo a competency evaluation.

Within 10 days of receiving Joseph Feltner's evaluation, a competency hearing will be held, Judge Matthew Crehan of Butler County Common Pleas Court ordered Monday.

Crehan also increased the bond to $100,000 for Feltner, indicted last week on charges of murder and felony abduction in the death of Douglas Smith, 80, also of Hamilton.

Feltner is accused of beating his grandfather Nov. 1 at Armor Storage and locking him in his storage unit, according to Fairfield police, who also said Feltner admitted to the beating. Smith was in a coma about three weeks before he died Nov. 25.

County Prosecutor Robin Piper said the altercation occurred after Smith "made an off-handed comment" Feltner took as criticism and was embarrassed.
