The audible commentary
Marist's Jordan one of few surprises at pre-draft camp
Friday, June 01, 2007
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Tall older people on cell phones watching tall younger people play basketball.
That's the "insider" look at the NBA pre-draft camp. Well, that and $2.50 for a candy bar in the vending machines (that'll look good on the expense report). That makes a $2 Coke look like a deal.
Extras
Some other random observations from the Milk House Gym (yes, sponsored by the Dairy Association).
• ESPN rules the planet, whether we like it or not. They have great reporters who work hard, so it's not like they need the advantage of buying access.
Only ESPN and ESPNU could have personnel on the court. But that's how it works when you're (a) the corporate sister/partner to Disney and the NBA and (b) you pay a lot of money to the NBA.
• Florida's Taurean Green can play in the NBA. He showed enough at the camp for a team to be confident in his point guard skills.
But another guy on Green's team stood out. That was Jared Jordan, a 6-foot-2, 186-pound guy from Marist.
The senior impressed several people in the stands, with one guy who repeatedly said, "He just makes plays." Say what you will about Marist's competition, but Jordan did average 17.2 points and 8.7 assists this past season.
• Jerry West spent a lot of time Thursday talking to Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy, who coached the Lakers from 1990-92. Dunleavy was 101-63 in the regular season and 13-10 in the playoffs.
He left the Lakers for Milwaukee, where his teams won 28, 20, 34 and 25 games. Maybe West was asking, "Why'd you leave again?"
