Miami Football: Take Five

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Which senior will Miami miss the most next season?

An easy pick. This season Ryne Robinson has 37.5 percent of the RedHawks' pass receptions, 41.8 percent of their pass receiving yards and 53.8 percent of their touchdown catches.

Extras

Robinson still needs 85 yards to break the NCAA career punt-return record. With one game left, does he have a realistic shot?

Only if the Ohio Bobcats, who already have won the Mid-American Conference East Division championship, are good sports and kick the ball in his direction at least once or twice. Robinson needs to break at least one long return against the Bobcats, who just might be a little leery about punting the ball anywhere except out of bounds. As a freshman in 2003, Robinson returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown against the Bobcats. In 2004 he returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown against the Bobcats. Last year he returned a punt 46 yards for a touchdown against the Bobcats.

How do Mike Kokal's passing statistics rank with other Miami quarterbacks over the years?

Not bad, considering the circumstances. Going into today's game, Kokal already ranks 10th or tied for 10th on the single-season lists for passes attempted, passes completed, passing yards and completion percentage.

In addition to the NCAA career punt return records, are any other single-season or career records up for grabs at Yager Stadium today?

Robinson needs eight receptions to break Miami's single-season record of 90 set by Martin Nance in 2003, and he still needs one punt return for a touchdown to tie the national career record of eight. Linebacker Joey Hudson is two interceptions short of Miami's single-season record of seven, which is shared by four different players (including Ron Carpenter and Dick Adams, both of whom did it twice).

Joey Hudson now leads Miami with 87 tackles. How close is that to the team single-season record?

Not close at all. The record is 223, recorded by Marc Smith in 1970.
