OXFORD — Nathan Peavy's college basketball career will end at some point in the near future, but the Miami University senior isn't dwelling on the negative.
Not with his first NCAA tournament game looming Friday afternoon in Spokane, Wash., against No. 3 seed Oregon.
Extras
"I'm more excited to be in this moment, so I've got to savor it as much as I can," Peavy said. "I just think of it as an unbelievable experience. That's probably the word for it — unbelievable."
The Chaminade-Julienne High School product has been one of the top players in MU history and currently has 1,072 points, 30th on the school's all-time list.
Dave Zeller (1,079) and LeVern Benson (1,080) are right ahead of him. In 27th is a guy named Charlie Coles, who has 1,096 points and happens to be Peavy's coach.
In addition, Peavy ranks fourth on Miami's career field-goal percentage list (.526) and is tied for ninth in career blocked shots (68).
"I guess I can't be sad about leaving that much because most people have said I've had a pretty good career," Peavy said. "It's a good feeling to know that my time here was worth it, that I was able to show the fans here at Miami my abilities.
"It's kind of tough knowing it's going to be over sooner or later," he added. "That just gives me the drive to finish as strong as I can and make the best out of this experience."
Notable
• Miami's No. 14 seed is the lowest it has earned since the NCAA tourney began seeding teams in 1979. MU's previous low was a No. 13 seed in both 1992 and 1997.
• Oregon hasn't lost a game outside the Pacific 10 Conference all season.
• The RedHawks are 1-4 against tournament teams this season. They lost to Wright State (57-56), Kentucky (57-46), Illinois (51-49) and Xavier (68-53) while defeating Florida A&M (52-33).
