Miami to honor Roethlisberger, Hoeppner on Saturday

OXFORD — Two men who helped turn Miami University into a Top 10 football program in 2003, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the late coach Terry Hoeppner, will be honored Saturday at Yager Stadium.

Roethlisberger, taking advantage of a Pittsburgh Steelers bye week, will return to Yager Stadium for Miami's home game against Bowling Green. In a pregame ceremony, the RedHawks will retire his jersey No. 7.

Extras

In another pregame ceremony, Hoeppner, the former Miami and Indiana coach who died this summer, will be honored with a special commemorative plaque which will hang in the Cradle of Coaches Plaza. He will be represented by his wife, Jane.

"It will be great to recognize Ben and Terry at the same time because Terry was such a factor in Ben's life, right until the day Terry died," Miami head coach Shane Montgomery said.

Montgomery, as offensive coordinator, also was an integral part of the '03 team that won the Mid-American Conference championship and GMAC Bowl, won its last 13 games and finished the season ranked 10th in the nation.

Parseghian gets nod

Junior Nathan Parseghian probably will make his second straight start this weekend as Miami's place-kicker for field goals and extra points in place of sophomore Trevor Cook.

Parseghian, who has handled the kickoff duties all season, was given a chance to kick points last Saturday and responded by going 2-for-2 in both field goals and extra points in Miami's 20-13 win at Kent State.

"To be honest with you, it was a situation where Trevor Cook missed a meeting on game day," Montgomery said. "I told Nate he would start the game. I like the way he responded ... He handled the situation well last year after he was demoted.

"Nate's probably going to be kicking in this game. Trevor's got to be a little more consistent," the Miami coach said, adding that he still has confidence in Cook, who is 5-of-10 in field goal attempts.

Injury update

Senior cornerback Jerrid Gaines and red-shirt freshman right guard Bob Gulley both missed the Kent State game with injuries but both are expected back this weekend, Montgomery said.

The verdict is still out on senior tailback Cory Jones, who rushed for 125 yards against Syracuse but missed the KSU game with an injured knee.

"We don't know if he'll be back this week," Montgomery said. "We'll have to see how he practices the next few days."
