OXFORD — Austin Sykes might have been the third choice of coach Shane Montgomery to be Miami's featured ballcarrier this season, but he sure played the role to perfection on Saturday.

Sykes blasted his way through Bowling Green's defense for a career-high 124 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries Saturday during the RedHawks' 47-14 romp over the Bowling Green Falcons.

Extras

"I knew we'd have a great game," Sykes said. "We had a great week of practice.

"We knew their (defensive) line) slanted in, and when I was out there I was able to make the correct read and bounce outside," he added.

The senior from Coraopolis, Pa., became the third Miami running back this season to rush for 100 yards in a game.

Senior captain Brandon Murphy did it Aug. 20 in the season opener at Ball State when he carried for 123 yards and two touchdowns in the RedHawks' 14-13 victory over the Cardinals.

The next running back to reach 100 was senior Cory Jones, who picked up 125 yards during Miami's 17-14 win over Syracuse on Sept. 29.

A rare lopsided win

It has been almost two years since the RedHawks have beaten an opponent by more than seven points.

Miami's first three victories this season came by a combined total of 11 points. The two wins last year were by a total of nine points.

You'll have to go back to Nov. 21, 2005, for the previous Miami blowout, a 38-7 win at Ohio.

The RedHawks' 34-point margin of victory against Bowling Green, by the way, is their largest since Nov. 5, 2005, when they beat Buffalo 54-13.
