OXFORD — The Miami University women's basketball team has a secret weapon. Or at least an understated one.
Her name is Jenna Schone.
Extras
Although the junior point guard from Pickerington doesn't reap as many honors and publicity as teammate Amanda Jackson, who is one of the nation's top scorers, Schone has quietly become a major factor in the Mid-American Conference.
She proved it again Wednesday night, recording a double-double with 15 points and 11 assists in Miami's 63-49 victory over the Akron Zips at Millett Hall.
The 11 assists are a season high and tie a career high for Schone, who is on a pace to break the school's single-season record of 168 set by Heather Cusick in 2001-02.
"She's a very unselfish point guard," Miami head coach Maria Fantanarosa said. "When she can set people up, it makes our offensive execution that much better."
Schone said the only thing that matters when she plays offense is the team "just putting points on the board," no matter who scores or how it's done.
She also had three steals for the RedHawks, and Fantanarosa said junior guard Ashley Hawkins also "played great defense" against the Zips.
Jackson and Courtney Reed each added 14 points, and Stephanie Ford totaled nine points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots for Miami, which improved to 10-7 and 2-1 in the MAC.
Akron didn't make a basket until Keyla Snowden drilled a 3-pointer with 10:34 remaining in the first half.
The Zips missed their first eight shots and committed eight turnovers in 8 minutes.
A 3-point basket by Schone with 7:31 left in the half sparked a 19-0 run that enabled the RedHawks to take a 36-21 halftime lead.
Akron cut the lead to nine early in the second half, but that's as close as they got. Kara Murphy led the Zips with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Akron (5-12, 0-3) has lost five straight games since losing leading scorer Sarah Tokodi (15.7 points per game) to an injury during an 84-59 loss to Xavier on Dec. 28.
Both teams were horrendous from the foul line, hitting a combined 15-of-45 attempts, including 6-of-20 by Miami.
The RedHawks' next two games are on the road, Saturday afternoon at Ohio and Tuesday night at Bowling Green.
