It was a quite a homecoming.

Carter Camper scored on a penalty shot and highly touted recruit Andy Miele scored a goal in his Miami debut as the second-ranked RedHawks overwhelmed the Lake Superior State Lakers 6-1.

"It's such a great place to play," said Miami goaltender Charlie Effinger, who made 26 saves to remain unbeaten in five starts this season. "Being able to come out in front of our fans and have the energy of the building get us into the game from the start was key tonight."

Miami jumped on Lake Superior St. for three

first-period goals and never looked back in improving to 22-3-0 overall and 14-3-0 in the Central College Hockey Association. LSSU fell to 3-14-3, 1-11-3.

Jarod Palmer, Justin Mercier, Ryan Jones and Kevin Roeder also scored for Miami, which outshot LSSU 33-27 and won for the eighth time in its last nine games.

Miele, who left junior hockey in December and enrolled at Miami for the second semester, scored the first time he touched the puck for the RedHawks — 10:01 into the first period. Miele shuffled a backhander past Laker goalkie Pat Inglis on a rebound attempt in front.

"It was a pretty good way to start off my college career," Miele said.

Miele played 2½ seasons in the United States Hockey League for Cedar Rapids and Chicago. This season in the USHL, he had 30 goals and 41 points in 29 games for Chicago. In his USHL career, the 5-foot-8, 175-pound left winger totaled 125 points (60-65) in 139 games.

"We're trying to get him in the game and get his feet wet," Blasi said. "He's really only had four practices with us. I thought he did a much better job as the game went along. He definitely adds some skill to our lineup."

Camper had the crowd of 3,154 on its feet when he skated in alone on Inglis on a penalty shot. Inglis went down, and Camper lifted a backhander over the goalie's shoulder at the 11:54 mark of the second.

"He put his pad down so I had to get the puck up," Camper said. "The crowd was going crazy. It was pretty neat."

LSSU scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 49 seconds remaining to spoil the shutout bid for the RedHawks.

Mitch Ganzak and Bill Loupee added two assists apiece for Miami, which wraps up the series with the Lakers at 7:05 tonight.
