Petraitis leads Miami Baseball to win in MAC opener

OXFORD, Ohio—Scoring all eight of its runs during the middle three innings, Miami University's baseball team produced a solid 8-1 win against the University of Toledo in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams on Friday evening. The RedHawks improved to 5-11 overall and 1-0 in MAC play, while the Rockets dropped to 5-10 overall and 0-1 in league action.

Extras

Matt Erwood pitched 7.0 innings for the Red and White, giving up just three hits and no runs while striking out four to move to 2-1 on the season. Jordan Petraitis blasted two triples, going 2-for-5 from the plate with two runs and one RBI.

Defensively, John Edgington came up with two diving catches in leftfield for putouts.

Miami gave up just five hits to the Rockets. The teams play the second of a three-game weekend series at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.

Miami wins softball Invitational opener

OXFORD, Ohio – Shalise Lugo fired a five-hitter and Breanna Robinson had a two-run double as Miami University's softball team defeated the Youngstown State Penguins, 4-1, in Friday's opening game of the Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational.

Coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly's RedHawks tallied two runs in the third inning and scored two more in the sixth as Miami improved its record to 7-12, while Youngstown State fell to 0-8.

Rightfielder Christine Bills went 3-for-3 and scored a run for the RedHawks, while Meghan Mawn had a single and scored a run. Sarah Billstrom and Jenna McGivney also collected singles for Miami.

Rochelle Vanyi was the only Penguin player with two hits, one of them a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Lugo improved her record to 3-6, striking out three and walking four.

YSU faces Toledo at 2 p.m. Friday, followed by Miami and Toledo at 4 p.m.
