Miami tops Bearcats on diamond 11-8

CINCINNATI — The Miami University baseball team exploded for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday night, April 1, and defeated host Cincinnati 11-8 at Marge Schott Stadium.

Jordan Petraitas had two hits and three RBIs for the RedHawks (6-17). Lakota West grad Brad Gschwind and Adam Eaton marked three hits apiece, with Eaton and Chris Nadeau plating two runs apiece.

John Greene started and went 4 1/3 innings to get the mound win for MU. Steve Antoniotti, Sam Dawes, Edgewood grad Chase Stewart and Kyle Donawerth, another Lakota West product, followed Greene to the hill.

The Bearcats (12-11) used eight pitchers. Cameron Satterwhite collected four hits for UC, and Justin Riddell had two hits and three RBIs.

Cincinnati heads to Connecticut for a three-game series this weekend. Miami travels to Indiana this afternoon.

RedHawks split at EKU in softball

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Miami University softball team is 13-15 after splitting a doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday.

The RedHawks managed just three hits in the opener and were run-ruled 8-0 in five innings.

In the nightcap, MU broke a 7-7 tie with three runs in the top of the eighth and triumphed 10-8. Meredith Linch was the winning pitcher in relief, and hitting leaders included Alicia Hogl (4-for-5, two RBIs), Breanna Robinson (3-for-5, home run, three RBIs), Kimberly Williams (three hits), Jenna McGivney (two RBIs) and Christine Bills (two RBIs).

Miami resumes Mid-American Conference play at home Friday, April 4, facing Bowling Green in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

MU's Veatch, Beach take MAC honors

OXFORD — Miami University's Michael Veatch and Dan Beach have been named the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week.

Veatch, a senior from Middletown, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9 minutes, 5.26 seconds last week at the Southern Ohio Cup in Oxford.

Beach, a senior thrower from Arlington, Ohio, finished second in the hammer throw at the Southern Ohio Cup with a throw of 182 feet, 5 inches. He also was fourth in the discus (151-8).

Harriers sweep St. Catherine College

HAMILTON — The Miami University Hamilton baseball team swept a doubleheader from St. Catherine College, the second-ranked Division II JUCO squad, 2-1 and 15-12 on Sunday, March 30, at Foundation Field.

Matt Mays went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI and Curtis Blank went 2-for-3 for MUH (12-8) in the opener. In the second contest, the Harriers were led on offense by Bryan Fusco, 2-for-2 with two runs; Blank, 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs; Corey Murden, 1-for-2 with two runs; Jason Gray, 1-for-3 with a double; Adam Farwick, 1-for-3 with a double; and Mays, 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

On Saturday, March 29, the Harriers lost a doubleheader to Rio Grande University, falling 6-3 and 10-0 in five innings.
