MU's Jackson gets HM All-America nod

TAMPA, Fla. — After setting 12 Miami University records this season en route to first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors and 2008 MAC Tournament MVP accolades, senior guard Amanda Jackson was a 2008 State Farm Coaches' All-America honorable mention selection, the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association announced at the Women's Final Four on Friday, April 4.

Extras

Jackson averaged 21.6 points per game this season, 4.4 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game. She became the second player in MAC history to eclipse 1,900 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 300 steals for her career, joining Toledo's Kim Knuth.

Jackson is the second MU player to earn All-America plaudits as Linda Mallender was a third-team Women's Basketball News All-America selection in 1983.

RedHawks fall to UT in nine innings 3-2

OXFORD — Meghan Mawn had three hits and an RBI on Sunday, April 6, as the Miami University softball team dropped a 3-2, nine-inning decision to visiting Toledo.

Halle Popson and Kimberly Williams each marked two hits for the RedHawks, who fell to 15-17, 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets are 7-14, 1-5.

MU, trailing 3-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth, got a two-out RBI single from Sarah Billstrom. But a lineout ended the contest.

Miami returns to action at home at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, against Ball State.

Odds and ends

Tennis: Nikolay Davydenko became the first Russian to win the Sony Ericsson Open with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Rafael Nadal on Sunday.

College basketball: Texas assistant coach Ken McDonald will take over as head coach at Western Kentucky. McDonald replaces Darrin Horn, who left last week to become the head coach at South Carolina.
