SPRINGFIELD — Austin Moore made four trips to the Miami University campus in Oxford.

"Every time I went I felt more comfortable," the Springfield High School senior said.

The 6-foot, 215-pound linebacker will have a chance to get even more comfortable at Miami after he verbally committed on Saturday, July 26, to play college football at the school. Moore received a full-scholarship offer from the program in June.

Moore's college selection won't become official until the NCAA national signing day in February.

"One of the things I really liked about it was the coaching staff," Moore said. "They're real nice people, and they really made me feel comfortable. The campus is nice. It's big, but not too big. It's a size where I don't know everybody, but I know a lot of people. It was just beautiful."

Moore chose Miami over three other Mid-American Conference schools. A three-year defensive starter at North High School, Moore will also play linebacker with the new Springfield football team. He said he felt relieved to make his college choice before the football season began.

"Now I can just go out and have fun," Moore said.

Springfield football coach Rick Robertson said Miami is a good fit for Moore.

"He's a kid that can make an impact during a game," Robertson said. "He's a hard-working kid, and I think those are all pieces of the puzzle that they want."

The RedHawks went 6-7 in 2007, losing to Central Michigan University in the MAC championship game.

Moore joins a long list of Springfield athletes to play for the Miami football team. The latest was 2003 South High School graduate Jerrid Gaines, who just completed his tenure with the team.
