OXFORD — After being absent without official leave for one evening, the offense for the Miami University hockey team was back in full force Saturday, Nov. 1, and gave the Alaska Nanooks the full treatment.
Ten different RedHawks had a hand in the scoring as Miami socked it to Alaska 5-0 to gain a split of the series at Steve Cady Arena.
"If one team moves and one team's standing still," said Alaska coach Dallas Ferguson, "it's not a good matchup for the team that's standing still."
"Our main goal was to come out with a purpose and make them match our intensity instead of us having to match theirs," said Miami's Carter Camper, who led the charge with two goals and an assist.
True freshman goaltender Connor Knapp recorded his first collegiate shutout for the RedHawks, who improved to 4-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Nanooks slipped to 4-3-1, 2-2-0.
"Last night, we didn't play as a team," Camper said. "Tonight, we wanted to focus on trusting each other."
"When we play as a team and we're ready to go," Miami coach Enrico Blasi said, "we're a pretty good team."
The RedHawks struck quickly, taking a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by sophomores Camper (4:23 into the period), Pat Cannone (7:36, power play) and Andy Miele (12:20).
Miami got another boost early in the second period when Knapp stopped a penalty shot, the second time he has done so in the last five games.
"It's kind of old news, I guess," Knapp said. "I kinda said to myself you've done this before, and the last time it was before a more hostile crowd (at Vermont)."
Camper made it 4-0 with his second goal 4:43 into the final period, and Miele added his second goal on a deflection less than three minutes later.
Cannone had two assists for the RedHawks, and Camper, Brian Kaufman, Vincent LoVerde, Jarod Palmer, Kevin Roeder, Gary Steffes, Matt Tomassoni and Chris Wideman each had one.
Miami sophomore forward Justin Vaive had a shoulder injury and did not dress for the match.
Each of Miami's rookie goalies has a shutout now. Freshman Cody Reichard blanked Notre Dame on Oct. 24.
"I think both of them are playing great," Blasi said of Knapp and Reichard. "Both of them are giving us a chance to win every day, which is all you can do."
