OXFORD — Miami University's Mike Haywood is likely to be one of the more highly paid head football coaches in the Mid-American Conference, Athletic Director Brad Bates said Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Haywood was announced as Miami's new coach Tuesday after signing, according to Bates, a five-year contract.

Bates said he was unable to give more exact details of Haywood's salary yet, but noted that it has "academic and competitive incentives."

Haywood's salary, Bates said, "is going to be up near the top of the Mid-American Conference. That's our goal, anyway."

Haywood will likely earn a considerably higher salary than the man he replaced, Shane Montgomery, whose annual salary of $181,325 ranked among the lower end of MAC coaches.

Miami administrators realized that the head football coach's salary would have to be increased in order to attract a high caliber of candidates, and Bates said they were able to accomplish that without putting a further financial strain on the university.

"The primary funding for (Haywood's contract) is from private commitments from alumni and donors, which is particularly necessary at this point in our economic times," Bates said.

The Miami athletic director is confident Miami made a good deal in hiring Haywood, saying he was impressed by his intense concern for the student-athlete.

"The very first thing he asked (upon accepting the job) was a list of the student-athletes' contacts and phone numbers, and those of potential recruits," Bates said, adding that although Haywood was planning to remain with Notre Dame through their Hawaii Bowl game Wednesday night, "he's hitting the ground running."

During a phone interview early Tuesday evening from Honolulu, Haywood said, "I'm just now getting back to my hotel and getting to the front desk so I can get that information (phone numbers of players and recruits). I started making phone calls this morning.

"One of the first things we have to do is analyze the psychological disposition of our kids," Haywood added. "They have to have faith and trust in each other and compliment each other."
