Late shot doesn't faze RedHawks
Friday, March 06, 2009
OXFORD — First there was the almost impossible non-conference schedule which kept the Miami University basketball team away from Millett Hall for about a month.
Then there was the injury to Kenny Hayes. Followed by the injury to Eric Pollitz.
So it was nothing new, really, when the RedHawks, all set to celebrate a victory over Bowling Green in regulation, had to think again when freshman Scott Thomas drove what appeared to be a stake through Miami's heart with his 3-point basket at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
"It was another challenge put in front of us, and I thought we handled it pretty well in overtime," Miami senior Michael Bramos said after the RedHawks regrouped and beat the Falcons 50-45.
Bowling Green coach Louis Orr called Thomas "a confident young freshman. He's a guy I'm on a lot, but he never loses his confidence. He didn't hesitate, he didn't flinch. For a young guy, that showed a lot of confidence, a lot of courage."
Bramos now eighth
Bramos moved past Juby Johnson into eighth place on Miami's career scoring list with his 23 points Thursday.
Bramos now has 1,472 points, and his next target is Archie Aldridge (1976-78), who is seventh with 490 points.
Johnson scored 1,459 points from 2001-04.
The most, the least
The 24 shots taken from beyond the 3-point arc were a season high for Miami.
The 45 total points scored were a season low for Bowling Green.
Coles inches closer
Miami coach Charlie Coles now has 193 careers wins in the Mid-American Conference, only one away from the record of 194 held by former Toledo coach Bob Nichols.
First-half woes
Thursday's game marked the fourth time this season the RedHawks scored 17 or fewer points in the first half, but the first time they did it at home and the first time they did it and still led at the break.
Miami trailed at West Virginia 47-17 at halftime on Dec. 20, was tied at Dayton 17-17 on Jan. 6 and trailed at Akron 17-14 on Feb. 18.
Seniors honored
Miami's five senior players were recognized during pre-game ceremonies Thursday.
Making their final regular-season appearance at Millett Hall were Bramos, Tyler Dierkers, Carl Richburg, Isiah Carson and Sheyi Olaoshebikan, a 6-foot walk-on guard from Downey, Calif.
