Ohio State hoops No. 1 in coaches poll
It marks just the third time a school has been tops in football and basketball rankings in the same week.

The Buckeyes are No. 1. Oh, and the football team is pretty good, too.
Ohio State's men's basketball team topped the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll announced Monday. OSU (6-0) is No. 3 in the Associated Press poll behind UCLA and Pittsburgh.

This is the third time one school has sat atop major football and basketball polls in the same week. It's also the first time OSU basketball has been No. 1 in a major poll since the 1962 national championship game against Cincinnati.
"It's just unbelievable," said Gene Smith, athletics director at Ohio State. "It's great for Buckeye fans, a great accomplishment, and hopefully something we can sustain."
While the No. 1-ranked Ohio State football team awaits an opponent in the Jan. 8 Bowl Championship Series title game, the basketball Buckeyes play Wednesday (9 p.m., ESPN) at No. 6/7 North Carolina. Plus, OSU's women's team is ranked No. 6.
The first time one school ruled both sports was 1967, when UCLA's basketball team was the defending national champion. The Bruins football team was No. 1 until losing to Southern California in December.
The second time was in 1974, shortly after Notre Dame won the national football title. On Jan. 19, Notre Dame ended UCLA's record 88-game winning streak. The Irish were No. 1 until losing a rematch at UCLA.
Smith, who played football at Notre Dame, said he was at the win over UCLA. "Adrian Dantley was in our class," said Smith, then a freshman. "We were there cheering him on."
Mirroring the football polls, Florida is fourth in men's basketball. Ohio State plays the defending national champion Dec. 23 in Gainesville.
While the football team has one game left, the hoops team has a long way to go and hasn't even added 7-footer Greg Oden.
"You can never envision these things," Smith said. "It's just a great situation to enjoy in this moment in time. Basketball has a lot of games left. Let's get the big fella in there and get some luck along the way."

I am so happy that Ohio State is doing so well this year. It has been a treat to watch the football team this year (especially against Michigan). I live in Texas now and have been boasting O State all year. BUT the buck stops there! UNC baby them tarheels are going to be victorious on Wed!

I am an OSU grad (undergraduae ‘62; graduate school ‘64) and I remember “my” team of Lucas, Havelchek, Nowell, Sigfried and Knight (yes, that Knight). That was the last time we were #1 in both sports. As dedicated a fan as I am, UNC has the edge right now. Prepare for an attitude adjustment. Then comes Odom and we’ll be alright for the rest of the season.

Daquean Cook is the real deal. Greg Olden might get all of the attention, but Cook is the best player on the team. He can score with the best of them. His court awareness is not like the average freshman. When Cook decides to put as much effort on the defensive end of the court as he does on the offensive side of the ball- watch out. I’m just proud to say that this young man is from my hometown. He is something special. Buckeye fans don’t plan on him being there too long.

I am a Buckeye that have lived in the Tar Heel state for the past 23 years. The Tar Heels are nearly impossible to beat in Chapel Hill by opponents that taht are not regular visitors a la Duke. Without the big man Hansbrough will be impossible to stop.
Oh by the way they will call 2 quick fouls on Othello Hunter. Guaranteed
