Buckeyes football is not a 'Big' enough lure to sell the network
Tuesday, August 21, 2007
The Big Ten sure is making the "big sell" to try to capture viewers for its initial season of the Big Ten Network.
As I was watching the Reds play at Milwaukee over the weekend, I kept seeing the ads on FSN Ohio for the upcoming football season on the Big Ten Network.

It sure got me all excited.
I mean, I always look forward to seeing Ohio State play football. And it will be particularly interesting to see how the Buckeyes bounce back from last year's great season that had such a dismal ending.
In the past, I've even found enjoyment in watching the Buckeyes play the lesser schools on their schedule.
It's not that I enjoy one-sided games all that much, but when a team only plays a dozen or so games a year, it's fun to watch the guys play anyone. And, on occasion, a team like the Cincinnati Bearcats would come along to give the big, bad Buckeyes a good tussle.
But, wait a minute. While this Big Ten Network is advertising during the Reds games I'm watching on my Time Warner Cable station, I won't be able to get the Big Ten Network on cable.
Do the people who run the Big Ten schools believe I am going to quit taking cable and switch to DirecTV just to watch the Big Ten?
Hey, I love the Buckeyes, but I can listen to them on radio . . . at least until they take the games off and try to sell me the Big Ten Radio Network.
