Big Ten Network deal called 'fairly unlikely'
Thursday, August 30, 2007
> What are your thoughts?
It is "fairly unlikely" that Time Warner Cable will reach an agreement to carry the Big Ten Network before this weekend's college football games, a BTN spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The network, which debuts at 8 tonight, has faced contentious negotiations with the country's major cable companies about carrying the channel dedicated to the Big Ten Conference.
Extras
While some providers — including DirecTV, Insight and Buckeye CableSystem — have purchased the channel, area Ohio State fans serviced by Time Warner almost certainly won't be able to watch the Buckeyes' season opener Saturday against Youngstown State in their homes.
"The Big Ten Network continues to insist on being part of our Standard Cable service requiring all our customers — fans and nonfans — to pay their high price," Time Warner spokeswoman Karen Baxter said in an e-mail.

BIG TEN NETWORK IS OWNED 49 % by DIRECT TV. Is there any wonder why it wants so much money from cable providers. I read today that the Big Ten network costs cable providers 1.10 per month per customer. They stand to make 300 million Dollars this year from cable. That is crazy. I also looked up some info on ESPN. TWC pays .55 per month per customer for ESPN. Why does the Big Ten Network Cost so much? Why is it only .10 cents per month for Customers in Other states like West Virginia?

I not only called TWC in Northern Ohio, I went in and talked to them.
Talk about being RUDE! I was told that TWC was in the business to make money, and not to provide football games to the community for what amounts to be FREE.
I was told I would have to subscribe to a new Sports Tier of channels. Which I was told could cost between $7.50 and $12.50 per month ON top of the cost of digital cable.
This is just highway robbery. Where is congress? I am really sick of the continual talk about of elected officials that not having regulation will make things cheaper. It might work IF there was real competition. But there is none. Cable is Cable, dish is dish. The only competition is via what we can get from an antenna. And where I live the city does not permit them on the roof. A Dish has to be mounted in the yard (great for the kids).
Who should I be mad at?
The Big Ten for wanting to make money by selling their product ?
The BIG TEN NETWORK for how they control the service ?
Time Warner for how they want to market it ?
I do not know who I should be mad at! So, I am just going to be MAD has HELL and I do not want to have to take it anymore! (paraphrased from “Network”)

We have the same problem here in Iowa, BTN and Mediacom can’t come to terms, so none of us here in eastern Iowa will get the games. BTN is a bunch of Greedy Bastards. I hate Mediacom, but I hope they don’t cave to BTN’s demands.
At this weekend’s Hawkey Huddle Pep rally out on Navy Pier in Chicago, they announced the BTN TV Crew was there and to show our Hawkeye Pride…they were boo’d soundly, lots of single finger salutes.

I am a PSU fan near Philadelphia and we suffer the same fate as Comcast has not come to terms with the Big Ten. Personally, Comcast is a terrible provider in its own right, but they, just like Time Warner, are not at fault. It is the over greedy Big Ten at fault. Instead of fans getting to see the games they want on ESPN and even local TV for the price of normal cable, they want to extract even more money than the millions they already make. Down with BTN!!

Uh, all of the Time Warner bashers need to sit back and think before spouting off at the mouth. True, they might be a horrible cable provider, BUT, why is it their fault that the BTN has taken the games out of the fans hands just to make more money. The BIG TEN NETWORK is the enemy here. They want to CHARGE you to watch the very games that we used to watch for free. Get a grip people and realize its the BTN’s fault, unless you like paying for something that used to be free!

I agree with the assessment of Time Warner. The OSU games used to be free on local stations in Dayton. We are paying too much & not even getting the stations we want. I plan to watch the Buckeye/Youngstown St. game on my computer & am seriously considering cancelling Time Warner Cable/telephone/intenet service. We need all of our Buckeyes games to be broadcast! This is a big mistake Time Warner….you will lose customers this fall.

Oh, 1 more thing. They hate this. Cancel the service! I was paying twice as much being advertised on a special. I called them 4 the lower rate. They said it was for NEW cust only. So I said, cancel me! ‘New cust’ meant 30 days before I could start back up. I went down the next day, turned in my modem and DVR. Since it took them 3 weeks to disconnect me, I was only w/out cable for a week. And I got the rate I wanted! TW sucks. Plain & simple. we need more providers!!!!!

When I lived in Columbus, we had a choice! With Insight I paid $32/mo for digital cable. Think Time Warner would do that? The point is we pay (AN OUTRAGEOUS AMOUNT) for a service. And now we aren’t getting the level of quality we are paying for. If U want hooked up, wait 3 weeks. They suck! But what choice is there? Time Warner has a monopoly in this area. & if it takes the BTN to get people demadning more providers, GREAT! CARRY THE CHANNEL!

I’m not too sure what the problem is with Time Warner, but I know of a sure fire way to solve it, the step I took. Imagine what an impact it would make if lots of peolple, maybe even all, demanded that their service be cut off. Instead of making nasty phone calls and such, just tell them to turn off the cable, or are we so addicted to it, that we really aren’t interested in making a statement, just a bunch of noise. Make a statement, disconnect it.

TIME WARNER IS THE BIGGEST EXCUSE FOR A CABLE PROVIDER! THEY HAVE THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEIR HIGH RATES ARE TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. I CANCELLED MY CABLE SERVICE WITH THEM THIS PAST WEEK, BUT NOT FOR JUST NOT CARRYING THE BIG TEN NETWORK..EVEN THOUGH THATS THE LEAST THEY SHOULD OFFER FOR RAPING THEIR CUSTOMERS WALLETS. ONCE COMPETITION MOVES IN THE AREA, WHICH WILL BE RELATIVELY SOON, TIME WARNER WILL BE BEGGING TO KEEP THE FEW SUCKERS, I MEAN CURRENT CUSTOMERS THEY HAVE LEFT.

Timewarner has the WORST customer service, the WORST programming and the last people they care about is their customers. There is no reason why Timewarner cannot pick up the Big 10 Network at no extra cost to the consumer and get rid of some of the crap channels nobody watches.A******S!

Time Warner says it would add 1.10 to our cable bill if they added the Big Ten Network. I say so what, if it wasn’t that, they would raise the bill for something else. Both the Big Ten Network and the NFL network want Time Warner to put their channels on their cable system’s basic expanded cable line up. Time Warner wants to put the Big Ten Network and the NFL Network on their digital cable line up which is way more expensive than their basic expanded cable package. Also, you have to get a DVR.

I am a long-time TW subscriber and it sucks, but satellite has it’s own downfalls. Time Warner has poor customer service and is SO expensive it should be illegal. The box rarely works right, especially for premium channels, my remote sucks, it took us 2 weeks to get RR working. There is no way TW is concerned about the $1.10 hike - I bet they could add it and still LOWER the cost and STILL make a huge profit! I will be one of the first to go with a competitor if they come.

We played Texas back to back, now we’re playing Washington (Who used to be good when we scheduled the game)USC the following two years, Miami for two years after that and then Oklahoma for a back to back. That’s about eight years in a row scheduling one of the top programs in the country. Nuff said!! Check out the stats of Ohio State or Big 10 against the SEC-be afraid…be very afraid when you go against the SEC post season. The big 10 is so good that OSU starts out with Youngstown State and Michigan starts with Apalachian State (don’t even think that is a real school)—In a few short months we may have an extra channel to pay for and get to see OSU bowling, Indiana Volleyball, Northwestern Marching Band, Purdue Gymnastics-Remember BIG 10 is not the OSU channel-there are 10 other schools and many other sports-gee I can’t wait!!!!

I am going to download the game from bittorent and call DirecTV to get hooked up. I’m a Buckeye fan and I’m going to see the games. I just wonder how many subscribers jumping ship it will take for Time Warner to notice. It won’t matter to them, they will just jack up the fee for those of you that stay.

Anyone notice the UN-ATTRACTIVE fatties cheering on the buckeyes in the picture…the one’s pumping her fist saying” Steak Steak O-H-I-Ohhhhhhhh man I’m so hungry and ugly.
By ND stinks too!

I’d be ashamed of claiming to be a Notre Dame fan. They typically have one of the easiest schedules in the NCAA. Just because the networks choose to show them every weekend, they never play anyone of merit, and end up almost losing most of the games to boot.

Everyone cancel everything. I have done the switch from TW cable to Direct TV and back and back again. I have had problems with all of them. All cable and satellite companies are out to make money. All companies are out to make money there is no mystery there. Consumers can just STOP all cable/satellite service and send a message. BUT most consumer’s can’t due to our TV addiction. What else is there to live for, but TV. I love the Buckeye’s, but I am not obsessed.

OSU isn’t all that people. Big 10 isn’t all that people! Who really cares all that much. We have crime issues, we have people homeless all over (not to only include N.O., LA) people loosing homes because of F’d up loans. We have a war going on. It’s OSU vs. Yourgstown state. And the kicker is, two HUGE $ making orgs. like the Big Ten and TWC can’t come together. MONEY MONEY MONEY..Watch Tenn Vs. Cal for FREE Sat night with rabit ears if you want.

What’s the big deal anyway? Ohio State is (and has always been) highly overrated. The BCS championship game is a testament to that. It should have been an all SEC championship game between LSU and Florida. It would have been a MUCH better game.
If I were an alumni of OSU, I’d be ashamed of their easy football schedule. Who cares if Ohio State can beat Youngstown? Sinclair Community College could beat Youngstown.
Don’t raise a stink until OSU actually plays a decent schedule.

Hey Drew, I feel your pain from being so misinformed. My salary/commissions/benefits are far above minimum wage. BTW, the reason you get such a quick response with your satellite company is because they have considerably less customers to deal with than TWC. I heard that you can put around 300 chicken wings on a satellite dish, plus a bowl of hot sauce! Unbolt that sucker and give it a try!! Have a wonderfull day!!

I think its a bunch of crap! If Time Warner actually cared about there customers which we all know they dont due to crappy customer service they would show them on the new net work. They must be a bunch of DumbA$$ blue fans.

This is all Time Warner Cable. Here we have a company that is not afraid to raise their prices on a whim, but suddenly they care about the $1.10 added for Midwest customers and the $.10 added to non-midwest customers. The BTN wants it added to the standard tier so that Time Warner Customers don’t have to pay $5-10 for an upgrade to some higher level tier. Please somebody bring a non-dish competitor for this crappy company into the Dayton area.

The reasoning for packaging everything together is to reduce cost, but you get channels you do not want. Some have been advocating “al-a-carte” programming where you pay by the channel, which sounds good, but unless you are subscribing to significantly fewer channels then the packages, you would most likely end up paying more. The per per channel idea would likely require a set-top box in every home, individually programmed to only descramble the channels you pay for, increasing costs more.

TW is not being evil or greedy when it comes to not coming to an agreement with the BTN. The BTN will not allow TW to offer the channel on anything other than one of the most basic packages. This means a lot of people who could not care less about sports would have to pay the $1.10 extra a month for a channel they will not watch. However, what about all of us who pay for networks like (name your least fav. station here). So a simple question for TW, why not have all stations be ala carte?

I have been a loyal Buckeye fan for 40+ years and will NOT call and request the game(s) be televised on my local Time-Warner Cable service. This is just another attempt to “stick it to the comman man” and squeeze another few dollars from him. I can listen on the radio…or better yet go to a Miami, Dayton, Ball State, or Bowling Green game and read about the Buckeyes the next day. Have a nice time Big 10 athletics. (The American way: suck every nickel outta merchandising these kids.)

This is about FOX Sports & News Corp. Fox owns most of DirectTV. Fox owns 49% of the Big10 network. Fox wants to do this for the ACC, SEC, Pac10, etc.
They will then have monopoly of college sports and it will be very unlikely that games will be on ABC, ESPN for free in the coming years. Everything will be pay-per-view if they get their way.
I am getting DirectTV, but for the Rugby World Cup. I hope that the cable companies don’t cave because if they do it will be their undoing and ours…

Hey TW Employee,
I am sure that time Warner is happy to have you for a minimum wage salary so your CEO can get a 50 million dollar bonus. BTW, when I call Direct TV, I get a customer service rep on the line within 1 minute. Your company is lucky to call me back that day. TW also puts you on a two to three week waiting list to have your cable installed or fixed. Do yourself a favor and quite defending your company that overprices its product and gives you a crappy lineup

Hey Drew, Are you trying to convince me of how great your satellite is or, are you trying to convince yourself? I believe the latter. “To thine own self be true”. A friendly tip: Satellite dishes make great party trays while you’re watching TW Cable. :)

Seriously, it’s a $1 something more a month on the basic cable package. Time Warner needs to suck it up, quit being greedy, and add it to basic cable instead of playing god with the sports channels. What’s next, take away ESPN??

This is all George Bush’s fault. If he wasn’t such a Big 11 fan this would never had happened. I, for one, am glad TW is refusing to give into this obvious extortion attempt. I don’t like sports and I do not want to pay any more than I do now just so a minority (that’s right, Sports Fan, most folks just don’t care) of subscribers can watch 5 or 6 ball games this fall.

If TW is so great why did I have to wait for 2 weeks for my cable to get fixed!!! I do not understand having to increase price. There are a bunch of channels on TW that I do not watch, MTV, VH1, BET, QVC, CNN, MSNBC, FX, E, WE, Oxygen, Lifetime, Lifetime Movie, etc.. and I have to pay for that crap. TW should include BTN in the digital tier package! I think I will stop the rant and call Direct!
