Q & A with DE Vernon Gholston
Saturday, October 27, 2007
Q Was there ever a time when you wish you weren't so big?
A (Laughs) "Maybe sitting in a car or something."
Extras
Q Can you ride everything at Cedar Point?
A "I've heard they put roofs on a lot of their rides, but the last time I was there, I could."
Q What's the weight-lifting mark you're most proud of?
A "A lot of guys talk about — and it's almost two years ago now — when I squatted 455 pounds 20 times."
Q Where does that come from?
A "It's a pride factor for me. I want to go out on the field and feel like I have every tool to be successful. I want to be as strong as I can and as fast as I can."
Q What's the best movie of all time?
A "I like 'Training Day' with Denzel Washington. He was kind of a villain in that movie, but I thought he did a great acting job."
Q Do you live and die with your home teams from Detroit, like the Lions and Tigers?
A "Not really. But I'm a huge Pistons fan."
Q How would you describe your mother (Cheryl Gholston)?
A "For the most part, she's been a single mother for two. Whatever I needed, she was there for me."
Q Has she motivated you to make something of yourself?
A "I'm more self-motivated. I want to become something. I don't like when people say I can't do anything."
Q What kind of music do you listen to?
A "The Isley Brothers. I like the Motown sound. The Stylistics, I've got them on my (iPod). Temptations. A lot of it stems from my mother and playing her records."
Q What's been the coolest thing that's happened to you at Ohio State?
A "I think finally becoming a starter last year. It was my third year, and with all the things you go through — I had an injury before that — and all the hours you spend in the weight room and all the film study you do just to become a defensive lineman in general, it all pays off when you get that first start."
Q Fans want to know, are you thinking of jumping to the NFL after the season?
A (Laughs) "My mind is on Penn State. And then it will be on the next game after that. I want to make the best of this season. What happens after that, I'm not sure."
