The Buckeyes, who were embarrassed by Florida in last season's national championship game, likely will make a return trip to college football's season finale.

OSU, which woke up Saturday ranked No. 3 in the Bowl Championship Series standings, should rise to No. 1 because the last big Saturday of the college football season was pretty much like the rest of them — nuts.
Oklahoma knocked off No. 1 Missouri 38-17 in the Big 12 title game, and No. 2 West Virginia fell to rival Pittsburgh 13-9. It was the third time in two months that Nos. 1 and 2 have lost on the same weekend. Before this season, that hadn't happened even once since 1996.
"We would be honored to represent Ohio State and the Big Ten in the national championship game," coach Jim Tressel said in a statement. "We know we will be up against a tremendous challenge whomever the final standings present as our opponent."
Whomever? Let's check the list.
The six teams behind the Buckeyes in last week's BCS standings were, in order, Georgia, Kansas, Virginia Tech, LSU, Southern Cal and Oklahoma. Georgia and Kansas were idle, while the other four all won Saturday. All but Kansas have two losses, but still, none stands out as a clear favorite for the national title game Jan. 7 in New Orleans. So we await the official BCS pairings at 8 p.m. today on Fox.
"I'm getting ready to get in the fetal position and crawl under my desk," joked Jerry Palm, the BCS analyst who runs www.collegebcs.com, when reached Saturday night.
Palm thinks LSU is the favorite to take the spot opposite Ohio State in the championship game, though he conceded nothing is for sure.
"Virginia Tech might have better computer rankings. Oklahoma might be better with the polling numbers," Palm said. "But I don't think either has the combination that LSU will have."
BCS selection day, scheduled for Sunday, is often a pro forma exercise, filling in slots with teams that already know where they're going.
This time, though, it will be a genuine mystery — completely appropriate considering the way this season has gone.
The biggest upset of the day was West Virginia's 13-9 loss to Pittsburgh in the 100th playing of the Backyard Brawl. The Mountaineers were 28-point favorites, but only led briefly in this one. The Mountaineers became the sixth second-ranked team to lose since Oct. 6.
Ohio State's climb back to the BCS title game looked highly unlikely three weeks ago after Illinois upset the Buckeyes. But a flurry of losses by teams ranked ahead of OSU allowed the Big Ten champions back into the picture.
The Buckeyes (11-1) will be making their third title-game appearance in six years. Ohio State upset Miami to win the 2002 national title. Last season, the favored Buckeyes lost to Florida, 41-14.
Not surprisingly, coaches and athletic directors from all the possible candidates were weighing in on why they should join the Buckeyes this year.
"Unfortunately, that game is killing us right now," USC coach Pete Carroll said of a loss to 41-point underdog Stanford earlier in the year. "Without that, we'd be coasting into the national championship game. ... It's pretty clear about our team, nobody would want to play us right now."
And LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman: "Of the two-loss teams, none of them did two things that we did. We won our league championship and we went undefeated in regulation."
Both of LSU's losses came in triple overtime.
Also in the running is Georgia, ranked fourth in the latest poll with its 10-2 record. But the Bulldogs were sitting at home Saturday while LSU and Tennessee were playing in the Southeastern Conference title game.
If the Bulldogs make it, it would be something of a replay of the 2001 season when, to the dismay of many, Nebraska played for the title despite not winning the Big 12.
"They ranked us (No. 4) for a reason," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "They believed we belonged there. Two teams lost ahead of us. Everybody knew going in we were not going to play for a conference championship and still they voted us there. They voted us there for a reason and I don't know why that should change right now."
Like LSU and USC, Virginia Tech also won its conference Saturday with a 30-16 victory over Boston College in the ACC title game. But some might find it hard to put Tech in the title game over LSU when the Tigers crushed the Hokies earlier in the regular season.
Kansas is also out there at 11-1, but like Georgia, the Jayhawks were sitting home watching other teams play for the conference title Saturday. KU lost 36-28 to Missouri last week.
Technically, Missouri and West Virginia might still have a chance, too, to become the first two-loss team to play in the title game. Still, Palm said it's hard to imagine either surviving given the size of Missouri's loss and the magnitude of West Virginia's upset.
Of course, with the title game still in the air, it's hard to figure how the rest of the BCS games will be slotted.
That traditional USC-Ohio State dream matchup in the Rose Bowl is gone. Now, USC-Illinois is the best hope of getting a Big Ten-Pac-10 meeting in the "Granddaddy of 'Em All." The Rose Bowl might also pick a team outside its favored conferences.
Virginia Tech would be an Orange Bowl participant if it doesn't make the title game.
Oklahoma, which wasn't looking like a BCS team before Saturday's win, is now a Fiesta Bowl candidate, which could knock Kansas out of the picture. Arizona State won Saturday night to keep its Fiesta hopes alive.
LSU can plan on a trip to New Orleans; the Tigers would play in the Sugar Bowl the week before the title game if they're passed over for the championship.
Another Sugar Bowl slot was expected to go to Hawaii — the nation's only undefeated team — as long as the Warriors could defeat 4-8 Washington in their season finale. But as the clock approached 3 a.m., Hawaii was trailing going into the fourth quarter.
In a year like this, what else would you expect?

Ok, I’m already tired of the all the LSU dribble and bandwagon jumping. LSU lost to UNRANKED Kentucky and Arkansas both at home and barely squeaked by Auburn and Alabama. They are completely beatable. Yes, I think OSU’s defense is better than LSU’s offense and I think OSU’s offense is better than LSU’s defense. Also, no one is talking about the fact that Les Miles is an idiot Jim Tressel will make him look like a little league football coach January 7. And yes, I think OSU will win 31-17.

Hey Bernie, looks like playing MAC teams is a good formula for getting to the title game. Keep the money in Ohio. Yes, I thik that is the point of playing those teams. I say keep doing it if it’s not costing anything. Go Bucks!!!

Nobody gave Florida a chance last season nationally when they played # 1 Ohio State. We all know how that ended up. This year no one gives Ohio State a chance. Good. Let the LSU players get all fat and happy with congratulations from ESPN, FOX and all the experts. Coach Tressel will have his team hungry, looking for respect. When it’s Ohio State against the world is usually when the Buckeyes come up with their best effort. In a season where Pitt beat W. Virginia. Stanford beat USC. Go Bucks!!

But we are not playing in Columbus. Look, neither team will blow out the other. I like this match up. Really i do. Ohio state has a great defense and a underrated offense. LSU’s defense is hurt and needs a rest badly. Dorsy will be healthy and so will Keyland Willamins , kick returner, will be healthly also. There will not be a lot of points scored in the one 10-7 or 17-10 at most. Can not wait. Good luck Buckeye fans. Hope you have fun in New Orleans. As far as the game, shoudl be a great one.

I’m happy to see OSU in the Championship game, but WHY is Hawaii not in it as they are undefeated, and the only undefeated team in the top 25. As far as weak schedules, anyone can beat a team on any given day, just look at what happened to Michigan. Mizzou, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and some other teams play a soft schedule to warm up the teams when they start the season. LSU will be a good foe and will let the Buckeyes know they are there. PS, I am a Buckeye, but far removed.

Doug, This message is for your colleagues at the Sports Dept. who wrote off the Coldwater Cavaliers two weeks ago. Their comment prior to the Regional Championship game was, “Nothing against Coldwater, but the Div. IV Championship is being played this weekend between Youngstown Cardinal Mooney and Steubenville.” We are sure glad the Cavaliers decided to show up anyway. We did too and saw an absolute classic. Ohio State and the entire Big Ten have their work cut out for them this bowl season. I would have preferred for OSU to play West Virginia for the title, but no matter who we defeat the whining won’t stop. There will always be excuses why games went as they did. While we are lamenting teams’ losses, why don’t we lament that Oregon’s QB got hurt . . otherwise, they would surely have made the NC game (beat USC). Maybe we should pretend that Oregon didn’t lose and put them in anyway.
