On Sept. 8, a University of South Carolina football player who was ranked the 51st-best recruit in Florida when he was a senior at Palm Beach Gardens High School in Riviera Beach, Fla., made a play that helped get Ohio State into the BCS championship game.

Three weeks later, a former Iron Buffalo Award winner for the special teams at Colorado did the same.

Then, for many weeks leading up to the season's final plays, a large number of college football players made some mostly anonymous tackles or hits or punts to aid the Buckeyes' placement in a second consecutive title game.

In the spirit of Christmas and the holidays, it's time for Ohio State fans to thank these players who, some say, gave them a gift in moving OSU to the nation's No. 1 ranking by assisting in upsets. Players like Emanuel Cook, the sophomore free safety from South Carolina, or Justin Drescher, the sophomore long snapper at Colorado, or Peyton Hillis, the senior fullback from Arkansas, and many others.
