THE AUDIBLE COMMENTARY

Pryor's absence only adds to the anticipation

Staff Writer

We didn't see what we really wanted to see in Ohio Stadium.

As we watched the Ohio State football spring game on Saturday, April 19, we witnessed returning starters and emerging stars. But there was one big hole in the Scarlet and Gray team lineups that won't be filled until the summer.

Extras

Terrelle Pryor, the Jeannette (Pa.) High School quarterback signed with much celebration by Ohio State, was on hand, but he's still in high school. He did not graduate early and enroll at OSU for spring practices, so he wasn't in uniform starting what many hope is a challenge for significant playing time behind Todd Boeckman.

Instead, Pryor (gasp!) is still a high school student, continuing what seems to be a trend of relative normalcy despite his celebrity. In fact, earlier this month, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Pryor would run the 200 meters for his high school track team.

"Why not?" Pryor told the paper. "It's just something to do. Maybe another championship I can win."

Sure. All-State in football and basketball? Show me three state championships, and I'll be impressed.

Pryor's absence on Ohio Stadium's field Saturday signaled the best thing about the spring game: Whatever happens, there's always optimism. New players will be there soon, and even the current players can improve.

The most anticipated player in recent OSU history is yet to come.
