Michigan recruits have no problem with Rodriguez's recruiting tactics

> What do you think of Michigan's recruiting policies?

By Kyle Nagel

Staff Writer

Monday, April 21, 2008

When Rich Rodriguez was the football coach at West Virginia, he recruited Trotwood-Madison High School receiver Roy Roundtree. The playmaker liked Rodriguez, but wasn't sure about the location.

"I think was thinking, 'West Virginia?' " Roundtree said, stringing out the end of the state's name. "I wasn't really feeling West Virginia."

Roundtree's dream school, he said, was Michigan, but the Wolverines and then-coach Lloyd Carr didn't show much attention. Wanting to guarantee a scholarship, Roundtree pledged to attend Purdue before his senior season at Trotwood began.

Then Carr retired. Michigan hired Rodriguez. Roundtree signed with Michigan and unintentionally provided ammunition to those who have criticized Rodriguez for his recruiting tactics, as Purdue coach Joe Tiller did in a USA Today story.

"You know what?" Roundtree said. "It was my decision."

Roundtree's story is one of several among Michigan's newest recruits that underlines the difficulties for both coaches and players in the recruiting process and how a few moves, innocent or not, interpreted as dirty can turn a coach and a program into a national discussion topic.

The high school seniors headed to Ann Arbor say more is involved in recruiting than just weighing offers and making a choice. The players have trouble saying no to the coaches with whom they've built relationships; they worry about whether a scholarship will remain in a few weeks and jump at early Division I offers out of excitement.

Although these issues surround every program, the high-profile status at Michigan and the verbal back-and-forth between Rodriguez and other Big Ten coaches have moved his recruiting tactics into the spotlight.

The recruiting game

Elliott Mealer's northwestern Ohio bedroom is decorated in Ohio State scarlet and gray.

"I still sleep in a room that says, 'The Ohio State University' above my bed," said Mealer, an offensive lineman from Wauseon High School.

Mealer's recruitment started slow, mostly in the Mid-American Conference. He, like most players, was hoping for the big time. When it came, it happened quickly.

"It had been Bowling Green, Cincinnati," Mealer said. "Then, boom, Michigan."

Concerned that a Buckeyes offer was never coming, Mealer committed to Michigan and stayed true through the coaching change. His commitment to avoid a long wait for another school is just one difficult choice recruits make.

Players said the process can add too much stress to lives that include school and practice. Kenny Demens, a linebacker from Oak Park, Mich., discovered that when Carr announced his retirement and Demens' former suitors reemerged.

"Michigan State, Tennessee, Boston College, Louisville ... it was that stress again," Demens said. "It was like I was being re-recruited, getting pulled out of classes, talking to coaches."

Many argue against recruiting after a commitment for just that reason. Often a player orally accepts a scholarship to end the process and shift focus to preparing for college.

Sometimes, though, the commitment happens due to anxiety.

"There are a lot of coaches out there who pressure you into committing," said J.B. Fitzgerald, a Princeton Junction, N.J., linebacker. "They'll say, 'I don't know how long we can hold your scholarship.' That's why even when someone commits, you can't blame them for still looking."

That gray area provides room to recruit following a verbal commitment.

"If people don't like that process, then they don't like a nice, fair process that gets your family involved," said Dann O'Neill, an offensive lineman from Grand Haven, Mich. "It can be tough, but no one's breaking the rules by calling."

What does a 'verbal' mean?

The main criticism of Rodriguez is that he continues to recruit players who have given verbal commitments to other schools, including Roundtree, Trotwood running back Michael Shaw (who first picked Penn State) and offensive lineman Ricky Barnum from Lakeland, Fla. (who originally chose Florida).

So, what does a verbal commitment mean? Presumably, players say they'll attend a school before the signing period to stop the calls, letters and visits. But with no written rules about the practice, the ethical debate continues.

"A verbal's not really much of a solid agreement at all," said Fitzgerald, who committed to and then signed with Michigan.

Although verbal contracts can be legally binding, they don't hold such weight with recruiting. Until the school receives a signed National Letter of Intent from a player, coaches continue sweating.

"For me, it's like 99 percent sure," Mealer said. "You can't always weigh the facts that happen in the future."

Brandon Moore, the Trotwood tight end, committed to Michigan before his senior season while Shaw and Roundtree were giving nods elsewhere. The trio ended up signing with Michigan, and Rodriguez critics centered on Shaw and Roundtree in attacking the Wolverines coach.

Of all the words spoken during a recruitment, about campuses and academics and facilities and coaching staffs, many wonder if those guaranteeing a scholarship acceptance mean any more than others.

"Almost all the schools still recruited me after I committed," Moore said. "If I didn't call them back, most of them stopped eventually. Some coaches started recruiting me a lot harder, like Tennessee, Miami and Duke. Sometimes you think, 'Why even commit?' "

I have read with interest all the comments posted here. The Game is played on the field, not on a chat board. I’ll bet that not one of you ever played on either team. I did. I was a senior on the 1969 Michigan team that won the championship by beating a great OSU team in Ann Arbor, 24-12. I have met many former OSU players over the years and they respect Michigan, and vise versa. There’s none of this whinning of “My school is better than yours.” It’s a tough, hard fought game fought by men.

Sitting here reading these comments from you losers make me sick to my stomach. I am a die hard U of M fan, and have been since I was able to know that I am from Michigan. Here is the bottom line Rich Rodriguez is a perfect fit at Michigan and will bring our program to the promised land within the next 2 to 3 seasons. Jim Tressel has done these same things the only difference is that he wasn’t in the headlines at the time. WHAT OHIO STATE NEEDS TO WORRY ABOUT IS IF FLORIDA WILL EVER RAPE USAGAIN

all you michigan fans are ignorant … at osu we had an easy schedule the past few years, but so did you. the next two years we play usc, then university of miami (fl) two years, then we will have teams like oklahoma for two years, va tech, and cal. the fact of the matter is that as we speak we have our schedule for those opponents set up through like 2018. scum makes up their schedule each year besides nd … utah? … and it seems scum doesn’t want to fail against app st again next year

I find it amazing that so many of you degrade the OSU football program. Since AP era OSU has more wins than any D-1 program, tied for 1st in BCS appearances, 3 BCS N.T. appearances in 6 yrs, and are in top 10 all time Nat. T. wins. 2x H. trophy winner,Top 3 all time. I don’t care who you are or play when you are that consistant yr. after yr. while other programs come and go thats impressive Wether you love them or hate them you should RESPECT them cause they are not going away ANY time soon.

MORGANTOWN—He never mentioned any names, but West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez made it clear on Wednesday that he was not pleased with the recruiting antics of a former WVU assistant coach.

In a thinly veiled diatribe directed at former WVU assistant head coach Rick Trickett, who recently left Morgantown to take the same position at Florida State and seemingly took a few Mountaineer recruits with him, Rodriguez vented about the ethical incongruity of a coach talking a player out of a commitment at one school to join him at his newest place of employment.

“Every coach has his own philosophies. I’m going to tell you what my philosophy is,” Rodriguez said. “You always hope that a young man is committed to your school when he says he is committed to your school. When a coach decides to leave, and that player is committed to one school, that coach shouldn’t recruit that guy. If you’re recruiting a guy who is not committed to West Virginia, that players is still out there, and you go ahead and recruit him. Otherwise you don’t,” Rod said.

“I recently hired Coach (Rod) Smith and Coach (Greg) Fry, but not once did I ask them about any players they were recruiting at South Florida,” Rodriguez continued. “Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t feel like that would be the right thing to do.”

“I could go on about it in not so G-rated terms. The hard part about it is when a young man is committed to you and you’re committed to him, that’s a spot on the roster that’s taken. So maybe there are some guys who are out there that you quit recruiting because you’re locked into him. Then three or four days before signing day, he switches on you, and you’re like, ‘Golly, I wish I would have known that three or four months ago so I could have signed someone else,” said the WVU head coach.

“That’s the type of behavior that creates had feelings in our profession. But I’m a big boy and I can handle it. We’re going to win with you or without you, and everything works out in the end.”

Melvin Fellows committed to Illinois in December. He declared the recruiting process to be over as far as he was concerned. He made a decision.

Tressel started recruiting him hard after the commitment, and several weeks later offered Fellows a scholarship. Fellows de-committed and is now at Ohio State.

So where is Nagel’s article using phrases like “OSU’s Recruiting Policies” and “Tressel’s tactics”? The Michigan situation is a non-story. Every team in the Big 10 has done this.

I have no dog in this fight and I am a WVU fan. UM should be fine after Rodriguez recruits players to fit his system. My gripe with him is the way in which he left WVU. You don’t call recruits and tell them you’re leaving a school and try to recruit them to the new school you’re going to. You also don’t try to talk current players of your old school to transfer to your new school. Honesty goes a long way.

Loved the last comment. SEC fans, did you know that in this decade, you are 0/7 when you have played Pacific Coast schools? You get the crap beat out of you every time you have to leave the South. In fact, you are 6/17 against the Big East in that same time frame. The Big East! And you are making fun of OSU, who is tied for the winningest record of the decade with USC? Wow!

I seem to remember that a kid named Laurenitis was talked out of his soft verbal to Minnesota by Tressel. Isn’t that what fRodriguez did? Folks, this is big money football and when you’re dealin with millions of $$$ anything is fair. Enjoy this time, Bucknuts, cause fRodriguez will figure out a way to beat you guys and when he does he will step on your neck. WVU fans, the $4 mill is practically in the bag, so move on.

As a WVU fan since 1945 Rich Rodriguez is the only Coach that I find disgusting and we had bobby Bowden. As a coach you make promises to your team first then your college then the state. Rod broke all of his promises. Is he a man NO. just a jerk that wants more money. I was born in Wv and left in 1957 to Ohio but Im Still a Wvu fan and always will be . My ancesters settled michigan but not i think the whole state stinks . O Yes I now will be A Ohio State fan when they play Michigan.

Does anyone find it ironic that RR wants to recruit football players that have verbally committed to other schools? He states that verbal commitment mean very little and claims he’ll continue to entice athletes until that actually sign with another school. Yet, he’s attempting to weasel out of paying the WVU buyout clause based on a verbal commitment made by Mike Garrison….

One last comment and it goes to the Ohio State football program. Over the weekend Chris Snook committed to WVU. Ohio State wanted him too. When he told OSU’s staff of his decision they showed nothing but class, told him WVU was a class program, wished him luck, and said that they would not continue to recruit him “out of respect” for Coach Stew. Fraudriguez doesn’t have that kind of class. You see contracts and peoples words don’t mean anything to Fraud. As you know.

He’s the first coach ever not to lead his team to a BCS bowl when invited. (Thats a great thing to do to your players who gave everything) Second Thank God for Charlie Batch steering Terrelle Pryor away from Fraud. At least someone saw through his bull. Hey Mat(ironic his name is like the doormat program of scUM).You are right the big then is not the Big East. The big east (WVU) has finished in the top ten the last 3 years with wins over the SEC champ Georgia on basically their home field (Georgia Dome) in the Sugar Bowl. Beat co-ACC champ Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl and kicked the living crap out of then #3 Oklahoma (Big 12)in last years memorable Fiesta Bowl without Fraudriguez. Oh thats right scUM beat an uninspired Florida team.

Having just gone through this whole process with a Division I recruit this mast season, I know that there are a LOT of coaches who ignore the verbal committment. The problem lies in the fact that most coaches at the BCS schools are going after the same players. When one of those players signs elsewhere later in the recruiting process, these BCS coaches are left scrambling for someone else to fill a scholarship at a position of need and go whereever they can to get a player.

Fact is…all schools continue recruiting kids until the very end. Even the beloved Buckeyes/Tressel. Everyone points to the Trotwood recruits, but no one mentions Michigan’s QB verbal, Weinke, who backed out and signed with Iowa at the last minute. California recruited McGuffie (UM RB commit) all the way up until signing day. The only reason this gets any attention is because Tiller complained publicly and Tressel had to chime in. Coach Rod has done nothing that hasn’t been done before.

We worry about these recruiting tactics which everyone does. IE Fellows a verbal commit to Illinois who was offered by Ohio St. after he had already given his verbal to Illinois. The is no agreement period. My question is why do we worry about this when we have college recruits sign with a university then to be seen later driving new Mercedes.

I would advise Coach Tillar that he probably would have wasted a scholarship on Shaw, if his goal is to have young men of character. When the young man advised his Alter teammates he was one of them, got himself elected captain of one of Alter’s best teams ever, then ran off to Trotwood within a week. One episode of welching on one’s word can be expected of young boys, but a second episode within year is indicative of character flaws. He may do well at UM, but you aren’t missing anything Joe.

Want to know what true domination is? Look at 1985-2000 - you won 3 $^#&$ times. In other words, Tressel would have to hang another 6-1 over 7 years to come close to achieving that mark - I have bad news for all of you - it aint gonna happen. Hope you enjoyed the last 7 years, get ready for another Cooper-like drought.

PS Are your scumbag fans still knocking over old ladies and threatening little kids who root for the opposing team at home games?

A michigan fan is really insulting the OSU strength of schedule? How was that first game last season? How did michigan do so horrible with Henne and Hart? And out of curiousity how many years in a row have you lost to OSU? You are right we lost two title games, but we also made it to two title games. This is our year with future heisman “beanie” wells racking up yards and boeckman under center.

I respect Michigans program and I hope Rodriguez keep’s michigans reputation clean.

Bill you may laugh at OSU football but please do not say that all people in the south do. I live in a major sec university city and while there are some who are so ignorant as yourself to say statements with little to no merit, many still respect Ohio State and view them as a worthy opponent. The tradition of the big 10 is amazing whether your a michigan fan or ohio state fan. When I think back to last year, what happened to Florida in the bowl game again?

A Buckeye fan knocking UM academics? ROTFLMAO! Take a look at any of the national college academic rankings and you will find that OSU is JOKE compared to UM. Everyone knows this - besides Bob the moron.

Also, Bob, you will never see an overall winning record vs Michigan in your lifetime. What do you think about that, loser?

Wow Bob…If you want to compare the University of Michigan academics with any school in the Country, much less the Big 10 and call them anything less the Best and Brightest, then you must be a OSU grad…dim and dumb. Look up the Rankings of the respective universities (assuming you have such a capability) and see where each Ranks…then you will know how Rank OSU really is.

RichRod is a snake that screwed WVU and will eventually screw MU. Michigan University will end up paying the 4mil owed to WVU and MU will end up at the end of an NCAA investigation very soon.

Rodriguez is aggressive…. He knows what it takes to beat the SEC…… “SPEED” That’s one thing PaPa Tressel doesn’t know how to do. OSU 0-9 against the big boys. That’s ok…..Keep playing the MAC schools and 1AA opponents and feel good about yourselves. Then get spanked in January by the big boys. People in the south laugh at OSU football. OSU you’ll be ok…..just don’t play football south of the Ohio River and you will be ok. RAH RAH
