Buckeyes appear primed for payback against SEC

By Greg Simms

Staff Writer

Saturday, August 02, 2008

I've had it up to here with pundits clobbering the Big Ten as a football conference. I'm about to grab one of those little, half-jersey-wearing, eye shadow-wearing Southeastern Conference guys and throw him into the Gulf of Mexico.

Problem is, that type of SEC football player has gone the way of the hula hoop. Now they are just as big and strong as Big Ten players and presumably much faster, which is why they usually whip the heck out of Big Ten schools.

Well, it's up to Ohio State to do something about that. And the Buckeyes really have the chance. On Friday, Aug. 1, USA Today published its Top 25 preseason poll. The Buckeyes, who have everyone returning except Archie Griffin, are ranked No. 3. The University of Southern California is No. 2, with Georgia looking a little strange up there at No. 1.

On Sept. 13, the Buckeyes play USC at Los Angeles. The Trojans don't have many starters returning, but they have the usual super subs and freshmen ready to wreak havoc. If OSU wins, it's likely the top team in the country, even though it will have played Youngstown State and Ohio University the first two games.

This is the year the Buckeyes are supposed to be really good, as opposed to last year, when they were surprisingly good.

So, coach Jim Tressel, you should be able to run through the rest of your schedule and play one of the SEC schools again, which brings us back to that speed issue. Chris "Beanie" Wells outran the entire LSU defense on a first-quarter, 65-yard TD in last season's title game. Might be a good idea if he had finished with more than just 146 yards on a mere 20 carries.

No matter who the Buckeyes play, they should reach the BCS title game and Wells should be the horse they ride, even if the spread offense finally becomes dominant in the Big Ten.

What do you think?

Congrats, LSU, you won the title. The rest of the SEC, SHUT THE F**K UP. When USC wins a national title, does the rest of the Pac-10 claim supremacy? No. Or when the Buckeyes won it in ‘02, did they chant “Big Ten” after winning? No. Not to mention, Ohio State got set up to fail in this past year’s game. I mean, let’s put the preseason favorite to win it all against a team picked to finish anywhere from 2nd to 5th in the Big Ten. Hmm, wonder how that’s going to play out.

Georgia’s turn to bring the embarassing whoopin’ to OSU this year. As an LSU fan, I will be forced to choke it out…. “Go Dawgs!”.

But at least Ohio and Michigan can field(mediocre) football teams. Wazzup with them other damm yankees in New Yawk and New Joisey? States with a combined 35 million people and none of them can play football? Boston College? Sheesh.

Shoot, even Alabama’s got TWO teams.

Even after O.S.U. whips the S.E.C. champ in Miami, all these clowns will be saying “1-9” vs. the S.E.C. It is going to take 10 years of victories to shut up these guys who still call the civil war “The War of Northern Agression”. This debate will continue for the foreseeable future.

The Buckeyes always look for one big non-conference game to balance out the cupcakes in the schedule (see Notre Dame mid 90’s, Texas, U.S.C. The U., Oklahoma, etc) Rarely does an S.E.C. team schedule a competitive non-conference game. Granted they have one more conference game in a tougher conference, however their non-conference games are always played at home. I think it could be argued that O.S.U. plays a similarly tough regular season schedule as any S.E.C. team.

What more do you want from the SEC?

They done put a whoopin on OSU two years in a row.

Go ahead and trod your slow team out on the field again this year. Then watch them bumble, fumble and stumble the game away.

Just make sure you are under the scoreboard when you cry and hug the other Buckeyes. It makes for great pictures on the intraweb.

There is no way to compare any conference to another, except on the field, when it matters. OSU have been beaten by the SEC most recently due to under-preperation, player experience, and mistakes when it matters most. Florida used OSUs gameplan against themselves, which I thought was brilliant. It also helped that the #1 offensive, and at times defensive player (Ted Ginn) gets hurt on the first play of the game. Last year, against LSU… inexperience and mistakes reeked havoc! Go Bucks!

Well you are certainly articulate, Neal. Your wild predictions are no-win for you. They make you look even more foolish if you are wrong, with no real benefit if you are right. I won’t make ridiculous predictions like yours, but I will point out that the Buckeyes have been quite successful in both the recent and distant past, even including a disappointing loss in a national championship game during a rebuilding year! They weren’t even in the preseason top ten!

I’m a Buckeye in South Florida and I’m absolutely tired of UF fans touting their Unstoppable One-Man Team. 41-14 looks bad from any angle, and I didn’t think the loss to LSU was all too bad…although it was a loss. However, I have no doubt that I’ll be in the parking lot of Dolphin Stadium in January, tailgaiting and celebrating our inevitable steam-rolling of some cocky, “badass” SEC team (preferably UF). Here’s to hoping third time’s a charm.

BLOWOUT! LSU didn’t blow us out, we handed them the game with penalties. OSU outplayed LSU (on their home field by the way) but lost due to penalties and mistakes. LSU did not impress me, so to say it was a blowout is absolutely false. Florida did dominate OSU and kicked our tail all over the field. Lets see what happens this year.

I am still laughing at your feeble attempt to bash the SEC. Your Suckeyes CHOKED the last 2 years to SEC schools. Quit whining, and just accept the fact that your teams CHOKED! Oh wow, yeah with Youngstown St. & Ohio as the first 2 games, USC is laughing at you, and the SEC doesn’t even take you or your conference seriously. So, try to quit crying, be a man, and admit that the CHOKEEYES/Toilet Ten will always be inferior to the SEC!

A weak Michigan team last year beat mighty Florida. I’m a Buckeye, but that victory told me a lot about the indomitable, speedy SEC. We can outrun and outhit them—we just need to get our psychology right.

The SEC fans are so insecure and jealous of The Big Ten and especially Ohio State. The SEC works and sweats like dogs to get recognition. It has permanently damaged their self image. To compensate they turn extremely cocky. If they only knew what lies ahead.

I love the SEC cry babies in here. Most of you would die to have your team even IN the national championship game. Sorry about your luck but OSU is going back for a THIRD time… HAHAHAHA!!!! In case you didn’t know we out ran you and out threw you in the nat’l game. We had a new QB that throws interceptions, thats all you had. We beat ourselves. We punked you the whole game until Boeckman went crazy with his interceptions. That was supposed to be our REBUILDING year… haha!!!!

How many more times must THE OSU be laughed off THE field after being demolished by a team from THE SEC? THE SEC has always been better and will always be better, THE SEC gets more coverage (except from THE OSU DBs)now because media types are finally getting over their THE Big 1(11)0 bias. Sorry that we don’t get excited to play bowl games in Shreveport or Tampa like Penn St and Michigan do. We have good weather all year. And yes, an SEC team could and would beat THE OSU in a dull, cold city

You know why the SEC players are so fast? They are used to running from the police!! Does any conference have more felons than the SEC? Seriously, EVERY year 10-20 SEC football players are kicked off their team, if not prosecuted, during the off season. Between Tennessee, LSU, and South Carolina they have more criminals than any other conference combined. Arkansas a close 4th..team speed comes from running from the law. How about an IQ test for them too. DuhSEC

0- 9 doesn’t lie. Come on pastor. PLAYING IN ARIZONA ISN’T a home game. OSU embarrasses itself by that argument. I tell you what. would it be fair if SEC teams played in houseslippers and robes with one hand tied behind their back. hahahahahaha. i would like to see OSU play in 120 degree heat and stifling humidity. same field same conditions. quit whining. u embarrass yourself. plus when osu plays michigan it’s usually in the 50’s. hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Come on everybody. Even Herbstreit said the Big 10 is some where between Conference USA and the MAC. I played in the Big 10. And trust me. The SEC is by far year in and year out the strongest, deepest, and the most talented. Herbstreit said the other day in his 13 yrs of doing GameDay, this is the strongest he’s seen this conference. Just be happy OSU isn’t in the SEC. Take it from a guy that’s played against the big boy SEC conference. You can’t argue the fact that OSU is 0-9 against the SEC.

Tall order for the Bucks to go to Los Angeles and beat USC. Ohio State needs to prove the skeptics wrong. Coach Tressel is one of the best coaches in the country. Little scary trip to Champaign Illinois ahead of the Michigan game. If they can win those 2 games and Michigan maybe a 3rd time will be a charm….

The Big Ten is 14-13 against the SEC in bowl games since 1998. This is despite the fact that the SEC has more teams (which is a small but indisputable advantage), the SEC team tended to finish higher in its conference than the Big Ten team did, 26 of the 27 games were played in an SEC state (exactly zero in a Big Ten state) and fully 7 were played in the SEC team’s home state.

PSU and UM routinely beat their SEC opponents and Ohio State eats them for lunch. Here’s to not worrying!
