Big Ten Network, Buckeyes come to Time Warner this week
> What do you think about the two sides reaching a deal?
Tuesday, August 26, 2008
Ohio State football fans who subscribe to Time Warner Cable will be able to watch Saturday's season-opener against Youngstown State, a TW spokeswoman said today, Aug. 26.
The Big Ten Network will launch on Time Warner systems on Thursday in the Dayton and Springfield areas. The BTN will be aired on channel 78 on expanded basic packages. Fuse, currently on 78, will move to channel 128.
The BTN will launch Friday in Hamilton, Fairfield, Middletown, Trenton, Cincinnati and surrounding areas south of Dayton. The BTN will air on channel 60 in those markets.
Time Warner and the Big Ten Network announced Monday night that they have reached an agreement-in-principle on terms of carriage for the BTN and its high-definition and video-on-demand programming on Time Warner's lineups throughout the Big Ten territory.
The Buckeyes play at least two games on the BTN — Saturday's noon game and the Sept. 20 game against Troy. In addition, the BTN likely will air at least one of OSU's conference games.

What the hell happened to my comment about you whiney people who wanna let the Big Ten rip everyone off by charging people to watch amateur sports? And yes you losers will pay for it and only you losers should pay for it. Now shutup and go buy a sweater vest t-shirt.

You fans of amateur football are crazy! The big ten wanted an extreme amout of money for their meager channel and TWC SHOULD NOT have caved in. The money they’re getting for this channel is an absolute robbery which they know they’ll get because of you spoiled little whining brats. And yew, you idiots will pay for it and you should. Now shut the hell up!

As a Pennsylvania transplate, I’m somewhat happy to hear the news that TW will now carry the BTN. There might be some Penn State coverage now which I miss. Good luck to you Buckeyes this year.
I used to have Comcast as a cable provider in the Philadelphia area. Comcast seemed to broaden their television lineup while TW continues to take things away. ESPN Classic, SPEED, Hallmark, etc. are now gone from the basic package. Plus TW’s customer service is absolutely absurd.

OSU has been negotiating with Time Warner for well over a year. TW insisted on a premium sports package and charge the fan base for the privilege of viewing OSU games. Columbus Dispatch reported on Tuesday that the OSU President called on all Ohio State Alumni & OSU fans to drop Time Warner as their cable provider and sign with AT&T or a dish provider as it has become apparent that TW has no intention of signing an agreement. TW signed an agreement 1.5 days later.

Great! It’s about time! However, TWC needs to get their act together on HD. There should be more channels available in HD and it should be readily available without the use of a digital box. HD content is excellent viewing, when the signal sent by your provider is good. When it’s not, your picture scrambles like hell. I used to receive Discovery, TNT, TBS, along with PBS, and local Dayton programming. Now PBS and local is all I receive. It should and could be better than this. Come on TWC!

Ok Im glad I get to watch the game at home Saturday, but how is it possible that some areas of the state are getting the BTN in Hi Def and us here in the Dayton area are not? I could see if nobody was but how is it just select areas. Makes no sense to me but again thats Time Warner for you.

Touche Sandy, Big Ten Greed indeed! As for HD, I don’t see the “great improvement” in picture everyone claims. And, don’t get too desperate for sports or other entertainment — the desperate always pay the most!

Hopefully there will be some actual programming on the allocated channel for BTN. Right now it’s just a blank screen (big surprise). I wouldn’t count on getting BTN here in HD. TW Dayton needs the space for all of those PBS HD channels. You know, the ones nobody under the age of 80 watch (if those viewers even know what HD or cable is). Oh sorry I forgot; this is Dayton.

I am glad they relized how much buckeye sports mean to us. I don’t think the fans would of let it go for one more season. Time Warner would have had no customers but michigan fans and we all know their isn’t very many of them left in OHIO! GO BUCKS!

To Convergent Tech Services. I started with Directv back in 1995, that was when only one box was offered. Everyone watched the same channel, no matter what room you were in. I switched to Comcast in 2001, back to Directv 2006. Live in NJ, when we have a heavy rain or snow, no signal. Now a days we seldom have either, but when we do, black-out. I now have Comcast as back-up…..GO BUCKS!!!

@Scott - So there is something wrong with me wanting a product from Time Warner and potentially being disappointed at their delivery? The Big Ten Network is broadcast in HD, I bought an HD tv and pay Time Warner extra each month for HD content, why shouldn’t I be dissapointed in them if they fail to deliver that to me? I would still watch the game, at least the first half since its likely to be a blowout by halftime.

I have had Directv since 1995. I very, very rarely lose signal. I actually can’t remember the last time my signal was lost. I live in a very windy location and rarely have a problem. Just responding to someone who said that Directv goes out everytime it rains. Never happens to us.

If I read the question right, it was asking what you thought about the agreement. How did this get to bashing the Buckeyes, talking about that other conference, SEC and General Motors and prices? GOOD GRIEF! If you don’t like your TWC bill then disconnect! If you don’t like the Big Ten or the SEC, that’s fine, it’s your privilege. I also understand why “SEC” is moving north and going to work for GM. It seems to be the place for poor grammar and spellers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am happy that they got a deal done. But TW still found a way to screw things up. They decide to put the channel on 78. Why not put it on 28? That way we would have ESPN, ESPN2, B10, FSN, and the Golf Channel all together. My tv does not go up to 128, so TW has found another way to take a channel from me. I have Time Warner. Thinking about switching to AT&T U-verse.

Kurt is right about the HiDef thing. TW is putting it on a low res channel (78). B10 Network content is broadcast in HiDef.
Another instance where TW doesn’t live up to expectations!
I don’t think TW has the bandwidth to deliver all the HiDef content taht will be available in February. Customers will be left on the short end of the stick again.

Let’s pay attention to the real issue here: the BIG 10 is the money grubber in this little dance, not Time Warner. Just exactly how do you all think TW is being allowed to televise the BIG 10 in the first place? By paying them millions and millions of dollars, that’s how. The Big 10 is the one making the profit here, not TW. It’s the same with the NFL Channel. I don’t think either the Big 10 or the NFL need their own channel in the first place — how much money do they really need?????

Direct and Dish would be great if it didn’t go off every time it rained. Also they do not show some of the channels that cable shows. I would say the cable bills will raise once they see how many actually watch the BTN.

If I have to pay more for the BTN then I am going to be extremely mad. If I only had to pay for the channels I watched then my cable bill would be at least cut in half. AT&T or someone more creative needs to offer options to pay per channel so those of us that want to pay for BTN can and those that don’t want to pay can save their money.

I am so glad that TW has added OSU big Ten games…thanks! NOW about the other channels that are gone. Hallmark for one. That is a channel that all family members can watch together without blood, guts and gore. Why can’t TW give choice channels program. Have so many channels that people really want and set a price on what they want. These 10 channel choices, so much, etc. Gov channels, religious and such are plentyful. Then prices go up for stuff lots don’t watch or want.

I just realized the BTN is on a low resolution channel just like the Olympics on TV2. (Come on TV2/TWC – get your act together or keep losing customers and viewers!). How hard is it for TWC to understand that it offers over 200 channels (and more everyday) that no one cares about and their customers are paying for! Get rid of all that crap and provide a package that viewers are looking for. You should be adding/moving channels to HD (or at least digital) not adding more low tier channels!!

I respect Time Warner for holding out so long. But money talks and I’m sure they were losing a lot of customers over this not just in Ohio but other states as well. If the deal is like Comcast it won’t be more than $.70 more on your bill. Unplug your cell phone charger when not in use and it will make up the difference. On another positive note the SEC has struck a deal with ESPN for 15 years so greedy FOX won’t have an SEC network. For NBC HD - buy an HD antenna for $30. HD for free!!

Time Warner will still be losing customers thanks to the emergence of AT&T services. You can watch not only the Big Ten Network but also the NFL Network in their basic 200 channel service at a much lower rate than TW. The picture quality is what sold me though. I have an old TV and the picture using AT&T is outstanding. Much better value.

Well, from the channel number, this will be another lame low definition channel, to add to the other 500 channels of boring, low resolution content.
The pathetic thing about Time Warner is that they don’t even provide Channel 2 in HD! It was sooo sad to watch the Olympics in low rez this year.

I like this but I will wait to see exactly what the deal is. The offer before was that it go on the sports tier or on a PPV chnl when all proceeds go to the Big Ten Network. I would find it really strange that this would be added as no cost. Time Warner is not going to eat the cost of this and Big Ten is not going to give access away for free. If they wanted the chnls to be free they would have just left them on normal broadcast tv.
