BUCKEYE PERISCOPE
Block O entrance set for opener
Thursday, August 28, 2008
COLUMBUS — What's brewing with the Ohio State Buckeyes:
Buckeyes buzz
It doesn't sound as if all the details have been ironed out, but the Buckeyes will come onto the field for the opener Saturday, Aug. 30, against Youngstown State while surrounded by members of the marching band.
Let's just hope this isn't a Stanford-Cal situation all over again.
Perhaps the most striking (in a manner of speaking) innovation for Ohio State's 119th season opener will be the team entrance into the band's Block O formation.
"We kind of rehearsed it, slightly," wide receiver Brian Hartline said. "I hope it works out and it's not a mess. It should be fun. Coming out with the Block O, it'll be cool. We'll see how it works out. Hopefully we don't take out any band members."
New cheers, additional music segments and other wrinkles are promised. Fan, traffic and security information can be found at ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
Brotherly love
Jon Heacock is YSU's head coach; brother Jim Heacock is OSU's defensive coordinator.
Yes, they're competitors. Both hope to win. Beyond that, they both wish nothing but the best for each other.
"Last week when we lost our video photographer, Shawn Coin, to a tragic death, the first person to call me was my brother to offer his condolences. The second was coach (Jim) Tressel," Jon Heacock said.
Brotherly love II
It's a big week for the Hartline family. First, Brian begins his junior season in the opener against YSU on Saturday. A day later, brother Mike Hartline is the starting QB for Kentucky when it plays at rival Louisville.
The two have shared some information, since former Michigan defensive coordinator Ron English is the new coordinator at Louisville.
"Other than that, he's really busy," Brian said of his brother. "He's stepping up to his own role. He's a grown man, and he's handling his own business."
