OSU: No timeline for Wells' return
COMMENT: Are you worried about Beanie Wells' health?
Tuesday, September 02, 2008
What's brewing today with the Ohio State Buckeyes:
Buckeyes buzz
The health of an aging head of state wouldn't be followed as closely in Ohio as that of TB Chris "Beanie" Wells.
Of course, Wells injured his right foot in OSU's 43-0 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday, Aug. 30. He continues to wear a protective boot on his right foot. He did not practice with the Buckeyes on Monday.
Wells fell to the turf on a carry at the Youngstown State 2-yard line in the third quarter. After lying on the field in pain, he was helped off and then carted to the locker room. He did return to the team bench to watch the final few minutes before cautiously walking back to the locker room. X-rays did not show any broken bones.
"He has been diligent in taking as many treatments as possible from our athletic trainers the past two days," Ohio State football information director Shelly Poe said in an e-mail late Monday. "Other than that, (there is) nothing definitive to report on his diagnosis or prognosis timeline."
Award winners
Here are who the Ohio State coaches thought played the best in the season-opening shellacking of the Penguins:
Offensively: TE Rory Nicol (one catch for 14 yards). Defensively: LB Marcus Freeman (2 solos, 4 assisted tackles). Special teams: PR Ray Small (a 45-yard return). Nader Abdallah was the DL of the week, and Alex Boone the top OL. The biggest hit of the week, as voted by his teammates, was supplied by CB Malcolm Jenkins.
About the only attention the scout team gets is when the coaches select their top players during the preceding week's practice. Just for the record, the initial honorees are: on offense, WR Ryan Schuck; on defense, DB Zach Domicone; and on special teams, RB James Georgiades. Consider it a little shout-out to the guys who get their bells rung to make the Buckeyes better.

Here is the up-side and the down-side as I see it.
Up-Side: Maybe now they will stop worrying about Heisman trophies and play to win instead of worrying about getting their Heisman candidate an additional carry in a game that was meaningless. We had the lead and Beanie already had 100+ yards. I love Jimmy but come on coach take out your stud after he hits 100+ in a pickup game when bigger things are just weeks away.

Yes, because he seems prone to foot injuries. He’s a big guy who can be successful just running over people. He needs to learn quickly that he shouldn’t try to get cute with the sharp moves. He’s not Barry Sanders. He’s more of a Franco Harris or John Brockington. At least they have the #1 RB coming in from Miami Florida next year.

Keep him out of the Ohio U game coming up. Keep rehabing it. Get him ready for SC, we’ll need him. Saine, Maurice Wells and other back won’t help us against SC. None have the combo speed/power that Beany has. If he doesn’t play at SC, we’re in trouble.

There is plenty of talent in the Buckeye offensive backfield. Tressel’s teams play as a team. This team will do whatever is necessary to win. Championship teams win with great defenses. This year’s squad has a great defense.

Of course, I believe he won’t be 100% until November. That is a tough injury to come back from for anyone let alone a running back.

No, don’t care either. He’ll recover fine.
