What's brewing with the 2008
Ohio State Buckeyes:
Buckeyes buzz
During halftime of today's Sept. 6 game (noon start) with Ohio, Ohio State will honor its new athletic hall of fame inductees.
Those honorees include a couple of football players, QB Bobby Hoying (1993-95) and OL Jeff Uhlenhake (1985-88).
In addition to being honored with several major academic awards during his time at Ohio State, Hoying also guided the Buckeyes to a 30-7-1 record and a share of a Big Ten title.
Captain for a day
Ohio State's honorary captain for the game is Dave Foley, an All-American offensive lineman and Ohio State's only three-time Academic All-American (1966-68).
Also at the half
Michael Redd, a Columbus native and ex-Ohio State player, will also be honored at halftime. Redd was a member of the U.S. team that won the Olympic gold medal in men's basketball at the Beijing Olympics.
Quotable
Ohio CB and Columbus native Idris Lawrence, who has 30 friends and family members coming to the game: "I have a pretty good fan base."
Back in Lincoln
Ohio coach Frank Solich played at Nebraska, then assisted Tom Osborne and spent six years as Osborne's successor in charge of the Cornhuskers, 1998-2003.
So successful were the 'Huskers under Osborne and Solich that Jim Tressel, then the head coach at Youngstown State, traveled to Lincoln to try to glean some of their knowledge in the mid-1990s.
"I remember studying with he and Tom Osborne and those guys when Frank was coaching their offense. They were doing OK," Tressel said, joking about the ultrasuccessful Nebraska teams of that era. "They were getting a lot of visitors and I was one of them. And then once Frank became the head coach, I remember going out there his first year and spending time. We ran similar offenses at that time."
