OSU has date with Texas in sixth Fiesta appearance

Buckeyes will make fourth straight BCS appearance and will face a No. 3 Longhorns team left out of title game.

Associated Press

Monday, December 08, 2008

In a matchup of tradition-laden programs, the Fiesta Bowl will pair Texas against Ohio State on Jan. 5.

The Fiesta had to replace Big 12 champion Oklahoma, which will play in the Bowl Championship Series title game. It picked up third-ranked Texas and then selected the 10th-ranked, twice-beaten Buckeyes on Sunday, Dec. 7.

The Longhorns (11-1) finished in a three-way tie atop the rugged Big 12 South and thought their 10-point victory over Oklahoma should have earned them the nod over the Sooners. But Oklahoma was declared the division winner on a BCS standings tiebreaker, and the Sooners ripped Missouri in the Big 12 title game to earn a trip to Miami for the national title game.

Instead of playing for their second national title in four seasons, the Longhorns will have to make do with a date in Glendale, Ariz., with Ohio State. Texas has played in one Fiesta Bowl, losing to Penn State 38-15 after the 1996 season.

The Buckeyes are making their fourth straight BCS appearance and seventh overall, tied with Oklahoma and USC for the most. The Buckeyes are 4-2 in BCS bowls but have been outclassed in each of the last two national title games, losing to Southeastern Conference powers Florida and Louisiana State.

The Buckeyes (10-2) have come a long way since a 35-3 whipping at Rose Bowl-bound Southern California on Sept. 13. After installing freshman Terrelle Pryor at quarterback, Ohio State finished 8-1, with the lone loss coming by a touchdown against Penn State, which is headed for the Rose Bowl.

It's Ohio State's sixth trip to the Fiesta Bowl and the fourth since 2003.

Orange Bowl-bound Bearcats

Cincinnati's first bowl opponent was Virginia Tech, more than six decades ago. So maybe it's fitting that the Bearcats' first trip to the Bowl Championship Series will pit them against the Hokies once again.

The Orange Bowl slotted Big East champion and No. 12 Cincinnati (11-2) against Atlantic Coast Conference champ and 21st-ranked Virginia Tech (9-4), meaning those clubs will play in the 75th edition of the Orange Bowl in Miami on Jan. 1.

"This is truly a great story," Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said, only a few hours removed from the flight back from the Bearcats' season-ending win in Hawaii — which ended after 3 a.m. Eastern time Sunday morning.

Virginia Tech has been to the Orange Bowl twice before, losing to Nebraska in 1996 and Kansas at the end of last season. Cincinnati beat Virginia Tech in the 1947 Sun Bowl, 18-6.

BCS bowl bids

Rose Bowl: No. 8 Penn State vs. No. 5 USC,

4:30 p.m. Jan. 1, Pasadena, Calif. (ABC)

Orange Bowl: No. 12 Cincinnati vs. No. 21 Virginia Tech, 8:30 p.m. Jan. 1, Miami (FOX)

Sugar Bowl: No. 4 Alabama vs. No. 6 Utah,

8 p.m. Jan. 2, New Orleans (FOX)

Fiesta Bowl: No. 10 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Texas, 8 p.m. Jan 5, Glendale, Ariz. (FOX)

BCS Championship Game: No. 1 Oklahoma vs. No. 2 Florida, 8 p.m. Jan 8, Miami (FOX)

What do you think the Buckeyes' chances are?

Here’s why OSU will lose: This year, Texas beat Oklahoma, Oklahoma beat Missouri, Missouri beat Buffalo, Buffalo beat Ball STate, Ball State beat Indiana, Indiana beat Northwestern, Northwestern beat Iowa, Iowa beat Penn State and Penn State beat Ohio State. Enough said.

Coach 24 is a numbskull, who writes like he has been sniffing to much glue in his pathetic life. I understand he has a need to pump up the suckeyes, but they are known chokers, who can’t win the big one. If they were in the pac-10 conference they would be USC’s door mat on a yearly basis. Pete Carroll can school Jim Tressell in coaching. I love what Carson Palmer said about Ohio State,he’s right they stink!

Coach 24 is obciously a moron with an IQ of about 40. This means that Suckeye fan has the IQ odf a developmentally disabled person, in other words he’s a retard. OSU makes a living beating up on Indiana, Minnesota ond Purdue, whooppee! When they play the elite schools they fold. I will enjoy watching Tressel get blasted by the Longhorns. By the way, Pete Carroll is the best coach in college football, along with Urban Meyer. Fight on Trojans!

OSU was gifted that NC half decade ago, because the officials made an atrocious PI call in OT. Miami should have won the game and NC! When SC visits Columbus next year they will beat the monkey crap out of the over-hyped and slow Suckeyes. I will revel in watching Tressel get destroyed for his third straight year in a BCS bowl game. He cannot beat the SEC powehouses or big-12 powers. Even Michigan can beat Florida! They beat them twice in bowl games this decade, in fact Jan. 1 of 08. OSU reeks!

This one’s a toss up… There’s the reality that the last time the Bucks played McCoy and the Longhorns, they won. Yeah they had Troy Smith, but their Defense is virtually the same with powers like LB James Laurinautis or CB Malcom Jenkins. I say 31-28 Bucks win.

Ohio Stae has know business in a BCS bowl game this year, anymore than they should have played in the National Championship Game the last two years. The game will be over by halftime, and Jim Tressel will wish he were back in the Coliseum of LA getting pounded by the USC Prophylactics! Jim Tressel is overrated and once again the suckeyes will get manhandled by a superior opponent in a BCS game. OSU fans are the most arrogant and biased not to mention myopic fans in the nation. OSU will get killed. You slow D is great in a slow and weak Big 10. OSU is overrated yet again this year and USC showed that, hell..Ohio U almost beat em. Texas will crush you with thier explosive offense and there is nothing Jenkins and Larinitus can do about it.

Expect to see Pryor on his back at least 3 time with Arakpo back and healthy.

Ask Arizona State University what happened to them in the Holiday Bowl last year, when they talked trash about Texas. They got an *ss beating, that’s for sure.

By the way, it would be nice to not have to read something written by illiterate OSU fans. It is a disgrace to have such illiteracy in this country.

I was at the Texas vs Oklahoma game in October. That was probably the best game in college football that I have seen, with Kansas vs Missouri being the second best. Ohio State has nothing on Texas. Boys, expect a beat down from Longhorn country! They are unstoppable. Forget the trash talk that OSU fans are well known for. The fact is when it comes to head to head contests, OSU cannot hang with the big boys. After all, there is a reason why the Big Twelve Conference is the best this year!

All you Buckeye haters will be sick when they crush The Longhorns. Pryor has complete control of the Off. With time off to master the game plan he will play at a top notch level. He’s a freak no one from the big 12 even comes close to what he can bring at QB. He’s going to make there Def. look silly. If you know foorball then you know our defense is playing at “shut down” level, it will be a culture shock because they can’t put up 50 or 60 points aganst the Bucks. The Big 12 has no D.

It’s funny how people trash the Big 10 for being weak but neglect to say how the SEC lost more games to the “strong”?? ACC this year in heads up play - each season is different folks. OSU can beat Texas, but can’t turn the ball over and must keep the Texas offense off the field. If OSU runs the ball and keep the Texas D honest with some down field throws mixed in, they’ll win. I don’t buy that OSU players aren’t of the same quality as others - I do think the OSU coaching staff isn’t as good

OSU 31 Texas 19…The Big 12 is overrated…Oklahoma gets beat by three TD’s. The big 12 will be the most exposed conference in bowl games. As much as I dislike the SEC, they are the best conference for now. As for USC…why do they still get the love after choking against lesser teams? I do think they will beat PSU…but, it will be close.

Saying the OSU Athletic Dept. should be happy they are going to a BCS Bowl because of the money, is like saying Bill Gates needs welfare. OSU is one of (if not the top) marketable college sports programs in the country. Boise St. proved everybody wrong when they beat Oklahoma. They are undefeated, ranked higher than the Buckeyes, and should be in. Ohio St. doesn’t need money, IT NEEDS WINS! IT NEEDS WINS IN BOWL GAMES against tough teams from tougher conferences.

At least they won’t get hammered again by the SEC, but Texas will destroy them. Tressel can not win a big game unless he has illegal players ie…Clarett playing. I hope Texas wins by 35 just like USC. OSU is NOT good. They didn’t win the WEAK big ten.

Texas is very good. I bleed Scarlet & Gray, however, I just hope Ohio State makes a competitive game out of it. With our offensive line, I really don’t see us scoring much. Our defense will have to play their best game of the year just to keep it close. I hope I’m wrong. In the same token, I hope Penn State makes the game competitive against USC, but I don’t see that happening either.

seriously? - The Big 10 has two BCS invites because tOSU’s fans will travel and travel big. Once you get past the title game and conference tie ins, teams are picked by which fans will travel. tOSU has fans that are more than willing to travel and will likely still travel in a down economy. Picking tOSU was more about $$$$ than strength of the team and/or conference.

OSU fans a re delirious if they think they have a chance in winning. You talk about defense… the same d that gave up 35 to USC. Pryor isn’t that good. A good team will put pressure on him and eat him up. He was fortunate to play against the soft big 10. Iowa gets the only big 10 win in the bowl season. osu gets clobbered 42-13

Buckeyes are good on D (can be very good at times) - Texas not as solid defensively. Texas good on O (can be very good at times). OSU solid on O, (can be very poor at times), Texas solid on D (can be run on) . Schematically, OSU at a disadvantage - their coaches don’t appear to make adjustments as well as other high end programs - kids can only execute what they are given. Preparation over the next 30 days will be the difference - Texas 24, OSU 17.

OSU 24 Texas 7. With every eye in Texas watching. I think the Buckeyes win 24-17. With Mccoy again being confused against the now Senior laden and experienced Buckeye defense. pablo - Florida went from #2 to #1 in the Harris poll after beating Alabama. Did you expect them to drop? Also, the AP is not part of the BCS formula. Just a suggestion, but you might want to take a look at things before commenting.

This should be a great game. OSU has thrived this year against the style of offense that Texas runs. The big question for OSU will be how the offensive line and Pryor handles Texas’front line. Same to be said for Texas- they don’t handle blitzes, especially corner blitzes well at all. I am actually looking forward to this game. Go Bucks

The Bucks do not run the ball well. That is because they try to go outside tackle all the time instead of running in between the tackles where their big but slow line can engage and block, and where there power backs can run inside. That brings up the linebackers and should open up areas about 10-15 yards down field for receivers. Keep a big back in to block-not Brandon Saine, who can do nothing now. Let Pryor run, look and throw, and figure out how to stop the spread offense. Texas 38 OSU 10.

Ohio State might play MAC teams and Div II teams but they don’t lose to them. Southern Cal always schedule weak opponets to tune up for there big games, but it never works, they lose to the weak teams. The Bucks Won in 2002 and have been to three in 7 years under Tressel. Southern Cal loses to a team not even ranked. Texes loses to Tech, Florida Loses to a team not even ranked. The Sooners lose to Texes. Unlike the NFL The NCAA puts to much hype on one game. The Giants lost to the Eagles, who cares? They are already talking Cowboys/Giants for next week. If you are 10-1, one lost don’t mean anything. Now Ohio State lost to #2 Southern Cal and #3 Penn State two national power houses. I’m not a bucks fan but all the teams in the top ten play a week early schedule.

I think OSU can play with Texas put it all depends on what our coordinators do. If Heacock isnt being aggresive OSU is in for a long day. If he let the dogs loose as he did against Penn State and Michigan its gonna be a great battle. For the offense Tressel has to realize its going to be tough running on Texas Deffense and the reason i say that is because the strenght on there D is there D-LINE. Put Ray Small in at the slot because like it or not he is a play maker and let TP do his thing.

BCS is a joke again this year. No way Florida should have been ranked 2. The Harris and Coaches went out of their way to be extra Biased to make sure that an SEC team made it to the NCG. Harris placing Florida as #1 from their 4th spot is just stupidity in motion. The best BCS outcome for the top 8 would have been Oklahoma v Texas with Texas Tech going to the Fiesta. Then all the top 8 get a BCS bowl and no one can gripe that the BCS does not work. AP, and Harris have to be removed from polls.

Buckeyes 28 Hookem…. Longhorns 20

The Fiesta bowl screwed Boise state, who would throttle the buckeyes if they played head to head. Overrated beanie and that youngster QB will get decimated by the longhorns. McCoy will run right past larinitis and throw for 350 yards to boot! Ya better hang on sloopy cause i’ll feel a storm a brewing that is gonna blow you away!

I think we will see a repeat of Ohio States thumping of Colt McCoy and Texas from 2 years ago. Texas is pretty much the same team while Ohio State continues to get better each year.

Ohio State - 49

Texas - 3

My ideal matchup for the championship ( not that I think the BCS got it wrong ) would be Texas and Southern Cal, so I’d have to favor the Longhorns over the Buckeyes. Not a big fan of talking before a game since there will be plenty to say afterwards. I expected OSU to be in a BCS game ( having fans that travel and ratings are worth something this time of year…how many times have you watched Ohio State? how many times for Boise State? ). GO BUCKS!

I bet Tressel let out a huge sigh of relief when he found out he wasn’t playing an SEC team. Texas and Colt Mccoy wallop the buckeyes in this one by about 24 points. The buckeyes don’t even belong in a BCS game, the only reason they got in is because you fans travel well, it sure isn’t because they deserve it by chalking up wins against, youngstown, kent, akron, and that woefully weak big ten conference.

Bowel games, give me a break. Win or lose, Bucks are headed for a great two year run with Pryor, he will go to the NFL as a Junior if they win a National tital.

Put it this way. The Bucks have the talent to win. Just NOT an offensive coordinator that will let them. OH! That would coach Tressel. Wait til the Longhorns make an adjustment and you see coach Tressel get that famous deer in the headlights look. Coach Tressel is very good at winning the ones he supposed to win. When it comes to playing equal talent, not a chance. I attended the Miami-OSU game in AZ. The Buckeyes won inspite of the coaching. Go BUCKS! Find an offensive cooridinator.

bucks34 and all rational thinking posters: We’ll play well and show well in this game. I guarantee it! They have the pressure this time. Yeah, Texas WILL be in a bad mood, but not as bad as ours, think about it. The game will be played on the field, not in a booky parlor. TAKE OSU AND THE POINTS!!! Besides, their passing game is their strength. Plays to our strength. IMO, Texas gets beat

This is for Chad. You are absolutely out of your mind if you think Tressel should be fired. So what if we lost 2 NC’s in a row? do you realize how hard it was for us to even get there in the first place? think of all of the teams that osu was higher ranked than…they were 2ND IN THE FREAKING COUNTRY so they can’t be doing too bad. He has had winning season after winning season and you say he should be fired? He’s one of the best coaches in NCAA football and you really need a reality check.

It may not even be this close!

So no one has much room to talk about us losing the bowl games. I would like to see how many teams who had to play Texas 05, Texas 06, Florida 06, LSU 07, and USC 08 and see how many teams can come out any better than .500 against those teams. Don’t forget that we weren’t even supposed to be there last year, it wasn’t OSU’s fault for 5 teams losing and putting us there. Take care of business like we do most years and you won’t have to complain when your team is sitting at home on Jan. 8’s.

them to thank for your viewing pleasure of more huge non-conference games in the coming years. And in big games, don’t forget that in 2006 we beat two number 1 teams during the regular season before falling to Florida, in 2007 we won 3 prime time games in big ten play, all of which were on the road, and in 2008 we big a Wisconsin team at Camp Randall before they spiraled out of control, a very good Mich. St. team on the road, as well as an up and coming bowl team in Northwestern on the road.

B-rad, Bernie B I’d like to know who your teams are because since 2005, Ohio State has only had on the schedule, Texas twice, and a road game to USC. And if Tyrone wouldn’t have screwed things up in Washington, they would have been a decent team, since we scheduled that game back in 2002 or 2003 when they were a perennial top 25 team, so your argument against our schedule is completely well stupid. Ohio State is the first team to start scheduling these huge non-conference games and you’ll have

Max: their last 2 bowl games, the NC’s, as you state have no bearing on this years bowl…I’ll give you that. But what does have bearing on it is the 2 big games they blew this year in the regular season, USC and PSU. The past 4 big games: FL, LSU, USC and PSU…they have lost. The odds are against them here of late and the Horns will be out to prove the pundits wrong about them getting snubbed. I dont see Pryor leading them to a win over McCoy and the Horns.

OHIO ST SHOULD NEVER BE IN THIS GAME OVER BOISE ST. THE ONLY 2 LOSS TEAM IN THE BCS PICTURE. WHO PAID FOR THIS. THEY’RE OVERATED AND NEVER BEAT ANYONE WORTH WHILE

OSU should not even be playing Texas if there was a playoff. Even though OSU may have not been in this years playoff if there was one. I will have very little interest/support in college football until there is so. I cannot support a sport that says you’re pretty much done after one loss. I could really care less who wins this game, because it is meaning less.

tressel cannot be blamed in full for the bowl losses the past 2yrs, Fla & Lsu had slightly better teams and osu players didn’t execute…tressel is not the defensive coord who allowed 38 & 41pts in those games do osu fans really want to fire a coach 7-1 against michigan, 4-3 in bowl games, 1 NC, 5 big ten titles in 8 seasons? would you rather have pete carroll at helm and lose to an inferior conference opponent each year?

Michael, I wish I could agree with ya man, but I think Texas’ getting jobbed out of the Big 12 title game and NC game is going to have them arriving in Tempe in a baaaaaaad mood, and with something to prove. I’m a Buckeye homer, but I just don’t see it happening in this game. Hope I’m wrong.

I’m not saying Ohio State will win against Texas. But all you naysayers need to realize that just because Ohio State lost their Last 2 bowel ganes has no bearing on this one. I believe they had won their 3 previous bowel games before they lost to Florida and LSU. My point is this is a different game. If they went on bowel records, they wouldn’t even play the game. Remember how big of a favorite Oklahoma was a few years ago against Boise State? And get rid of Tressel? Your Kidding Right? Max

Slim to none - For the last 3 seasons, the Buckeyes just can’t win the big game anymore. They need to start challenging themselves earlier in the season and stop playing Division II and MAC schools.

Well, it will be as usual. Overrated Ohio State University will get blown out of the stadium. But don’t fret OSU fans, there will be MAC teams to play next year…

I swear if Tressel gets blown out again he needs to be fired. All these great seasons don’t mean crap when we get blown out in our bowl games!!

If you have seen McCoy play you’d know the chances of success aren’t good for Pryor and the BUCKS

Texas is a better team than Ohio State, but I think the Buckeyes will have a chance in this one. The Longhorns are deflated after getting shut out of the title game.
