THE AUDIBLE COMMENTARY

Convoluted BCS will continue to spawn debate

By Greg Billing

I'm starting to miss those days running up to the presidential election, with all the campaign ads every five minutes and all the automated phone calls filling the minutes between. What has me yearning for the good old days?

The Bowl Championship Series.

Today, Dec. 9, is just the second day of the national title debate, with the actual teams decided on anyway.

And I'm already tired of hearing about it. Does Oklahoma deserve to be playing for the national championship, despite losing to Texas? Why did BCS doormat Ohio State get an at-large bid over BCS slayer Boise State? How could Texas Tech get shut out of a BCS bowl?

Here's how: There is no playoff system in place. Until then, the griping is going to continue. And there's nothing we can do about it, short of turning off the radio or television.

I'm not going into details about my plan to fix college football's postseason. But the current system certainly needs rebuilt.

The major bowl games used to be held on Jan. 1, making for one great day of football. Now they are spread out over a week, making for angry spouses who don't like football.

The polls still put No. 1 and No. 2 in the title game. But this system — this season especially — still feels like the old, subjective method where the final poll vote determined the national champion.

Texas and Southern California feel like they should be playing for the title, too.

And here's another BCS nightmare. What if Ohio State beats Texas, Penn State beats USC and Oklahoma beats Florida. That means a one-loss PSU beat the team (USC) that beat the team (Ohio State) that beat the team (Texas) that beat Oklahoma that beat Florida.

Too confusing? Exactly.
