GLENDALE, Ariz. — A backup cornerback from Ohio State was carted off the field on a stretcher after delivering a vicious hit against a Texas kickoff returner in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday night.
Shaun Lane waved his left hand and pumped his left fist to the crowd as the cart carried him off. Lane appeared to hurt his right shoulder or his neck when he tackled Jordan Shipley on a kickoff after Ohio State had taken a 6-3 lead.
Two teammates picked Lane up and tried to help him off, but he fell back to the ground, then lay on his back for several minutes. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and Texas coach Mack Brown came out on the field while Lane was being treated.
The injury occurred with 5:34 left in the first half.
Team officials said Lane was able to move his arms and legs and appeared to be fine but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
