Carter a finalist for hall of fame

8-time Pro Bowl receiver from Middletown on the ballot for second time.

Staff Report

Wednesday, January 07, 2009

Middletown native Cris Carter is one step away from the Pro Football Hall of Fame — again.

Carter, who was a surprise omission from last year's class in his first year of eligibility, was named Tuesday, Jan. 6, as one of 17 finalists for the Class of 2009.

This year's class will be announced Jan. 31, the day before the Super Bowl.

Carter, 43, played 16 seasons in the NFL for three different teams (Philadelphia, Minnesota and Miami). He ranks second on the NFL's all-time list in total receptions (1,101) and receiving touchdowns (130).

A member of the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990s, Carter was selected to play in eight Pro Bowls (1993-2000 seasons).

Before he starred in the NFL, Carter was a standout at Ohio State University and Middletown High School.

A minimum of four and a maximum of seven finalists can be chosen. To be elected, a finalist must receive 80 percent of the 44 votes from the Hall's Board of Selectors.

Other finalists for the 2009 class are John Randle, Shannon Sharpe, Bruce Smith, Rod Woodson, Dermontti Dawson, Richard Dent, Russ Grimm, Cortez Kennedy, Bob Kuechenberg, Randall McDaniel, Andre Reed, Derrick Thomas, Paul Tagliabue, Ralph Wilson Jr., Bob Hayes and Claude Humphrey.

If you don’t win a Super Bowl you should not be a first ballot Hall of Famer. He will get in this year. Plus I don’t have much respect for the Hall if they refuse to vote Ray Guy in. Punting is part of the game and he was the best.

Chris Carter deserves to be in the Football Hall of Fame, not only because he was such a great football player, but because he is a great man who should be admired by all Middletonians, and also by the youth of the nation.

I’m sure he gives most of the credit for his success to Middletown and it’s fine education system.

Cris should have gotten in last year, but looking at this group, he should have no trouble making it this year. With maybe only Sharpe, Smith and maybe Dent as the only other shoe ins, It appears to me Carter is in! He absolutely deserves to be in the hall. GO BUCKS!!! GO MIDDIES!!!

Absolutely! CC belongs in the HOF. He deserves it.

His career didn’t start off very stellar, but once he got his head screwed on right, he became All-Pro. Congrats on a HOF career Chris. GO BUCKS!!!!

He should be selected because he is one of the best at his position. Second is pretty damn good. He is a very good person who helps others in need.
