No shortage of passion on either side of OSU debate

By Sean McClelland

Response to last week's musings in this space about the need for change at Ohio State poured in from across the country.

My favorite was a phone call from someone claiming to have played for Woody Hayes. Could have been Rex Kern for all I knew.

"Jim Tressel is the best coach Ohio State has ever had," he bellowed.

"You're probably right," I replied. "Who said he wasn't? Can I ask your name?"

"Did you ever play football?" the mystery Buckeye demanded.

Rather than detail my days as a single-wing junior high lineman or mention that we ran stuff straight out of Paul Brown's Massillon High School playbook, I said, "How is that relevant?"

He hung up.

An e-mailer from Newport Beach, Calif., voiced what I'm sure many around Columbus would like to say but for whatever reason won't:

"When Tressel first came to Columbus, he had Mark Dantonio and other young coaches who wanted to make their mark and then move up to head coaching positions. Now he has tired old guys like (Jim) Heacock and (Jim) Bollman who are tickled to death to be Ohio State assistants. It's time to hire one or more Mark Dantonios."

There was this, in an e-mail from Florida: "Jim Tressel's ego is the issue. He has too many friends and family on his staff."

And this, which made me smile: "Finally, someone at the DDN dares to write what so many have been thinking. The coordinators are dinosaurs; the college game has passed them by.

"Please don't publish anything negative about Brian Gregory or the UD basketball team this week. Two historic pieces in one week might be too much for the readers."

Tressle is my HERO! The only thing he needs to do is promote Luke Fickle to Assistant head coach. But I probable am not informed enough to make that decision. Good Luck Jim Tressle in 2009!

I love Tressel but playing & coaching not to lose doesn’t work very well (example=prevent Defenses=prevents you from winning= it only works for the other team who loves seeing a team using it).

It was a blitz that cost the Bucks the Fiesta Bowl. Prevent Defense has it’s place, I’d say with 16 seconds left maybe you drop the LBs and leave the safties somewhere close to the goal line in prevent D…am I crazy?

The “worst senior class in OSU history” won 4 straight B10 titles and went 43-8? The 8 losses include 2 NC games and one loss to a team that wasn’t in the top 10. Wow, what “failures on the field”

The worst play-caller in CFB is 83-19, won 5 B10 titles and BCS bowls in 6 of 8 years? And has another recruiting class is ranked in the top 4 in the country?

How about instead of pitching Tressel, we pitch spoiled ungrateful fans……like you.

Tressel has raised the bar for the Ohio State program through his success. Frankly, we probably were not NC game material in 06 or 07 but Tressel was smart enough to get us there through a “don’t beat yourself strategy”. That doesn’t work well though against an elite opponent. Looking at the Texas game I thought there was more creativity on both sides of the ball than we had seen all season. Best coaching job since we beat Michigan in 06. Tressel needs to build on that next season.

Tressel needs to go. All of these Big Ten Championships are getting tiring. Plus I’m getting really sick of BCS bowl games and would rather be in the Outback or Holiday bowl. Plus it would be nice if he would let Michigan win every once in a while. I mean once in 8 years, that is terrible! My last issue with Tressel is lame way of getting the #1 recruit in the country to come to Ohio State. Come on, bring back the days when we couldn’t even get the #1 recruit in Ohio. Winning IS dull.

The young D-coordinator is already there, his name is Luke Fickell. He is currently assistant DC and linebacker coach and the reason they land so many big LB recruits. I wish DDN writers would use facts once in a while. Tress is the perfect coach for the program.

Also, Trotwood loses by three to Montrose and C’Ville by ten. But C’Ville is praised and DDN acts like TM should have won. What gives?

Also, the Trotwood game was the best of the tourney, hands down.

Before Tressel the last N.C. was in 1968! 4 straight Big Ten titles. Are people really that stupid? There should be no debating about Tressel. GO BUCKS!

JT has done a great job of resurrecting a Cooper program that recruited well and sent players to the NFL but, had no poise, had hosts of offield problems, in-team squables, and law suits, problems in the classroom and a lack of general unity and positive role modeling. Tressell drew a fence around top ohio talent that was defecting, brought back selfless family values to OSU football, made players go to school, and won. But Carrol,Meyer have shown great Offense is also needed to win NCs. ChangeO!

A good coach who believes in playing good defense, good kicking, and a conservative offense will win games. I like Tressel, but I do believe in today’s game both the offensive and defense needs to be more aggressive. Under Dantonio and then Snyder the defense was very pro-active since then the defense has been reactive. The offense has always been too bland. New cordinators on both sides of the ball would help. But regardless Tressel has saved OSU football from the Cooper years. Go Bucks!

I love Tressel but playing & coaching not to lose doesn’t work very well (example=prevent Defenses=prevents you from winning= it only works for the other team who loves seeing a team using it). You are so RIGHT MR. B playing to win is the ONLY way to actually give your team a chance to win the game. GO BUCK’s OH——

It bugs me when fans (not just OSU but all) talk garbage about these young kids & dog on them. When Pryor was taking longer than the signing period to make his mind up many fans of many teams were talking crap & acting like he was being a prima donna when he was trying to make the best choice for T.P even though he had pressure from many sides (too darned many if you ask me) but it was about Pryor’s life not ANYONE else & I applaud him on his firmness about his feelings not any others. It was great that he picked my favorite but it would be ok if it was different (yes I do wish all of the best would come to OSU) but I, like the great man who runs the program (I love ya Tressel) want the young kid to WANT to be at OSU, I WANT him to love OSU as I do & Tressel does but I love the fact that Tressel not only does not pressure the kid but that he wants whats best for the young person even if its not at OSU & that Tressel wants them to check out all other teams the kid is looking at so that he finds the best fit for him because Tressel knows one thing that most overlook that the College htis kid is going to go to is going to is going to make this young kid into the best darned young man as he can be & that will be the most important thing he will ever be (at least is suppose too do). As a coach (even if it is not at that level) I know that being a good person & man WILL be the most important part of their growing up as the fact that being a football player will only be for so long but he, we all will be a person or man (whether it be father, or uncle or what ever model roll it will be) for the rest of our lives so why not be the best you can be WHEN YOU TOUCH others life. Jerry THANK YOU very much for your insight to recruiting & OSU Football in general I apperciate it very much. GO BUCK’s OH——-

Ohio State fans are sounding a lot like Browns fans. They don’t know a good thing until it’s gone.

Unfortunately for Tessel, He wont be appreciated until he moves on. There is only 1 school in the country that has won more BCS bowl games then OSU. JT’s JOB is to put The Ohio State Univerity Football Program in position to win Championships. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but He puts his team in the MIX every year, AND he beats Michigan.

Excellent comments for the most part. OSU is now paying for recruiting all the beef on both lines. Big but slow is not going to make for consistent football. When I looked at all the talent on the field this past season as well as on the sidelines, it is hard for me to believe that game after game we see this talent stymied by archaic play calling. Coach Tressel is a perfect fit for OSU. His play calling is not. It might best be defined as totally borrrrrrrrrrring!

coach tressel is a great coach, but he can be an even greater coach if he lets and gets an offensive corridator and give up his play calling duties. tressel’s play calling leaves a lot to be desired.and switching quarterbacks between plays, come on give me a break. tressel stop messing up all these top flight recruits with bad play calling

Some new coordinators would be nice but OSU really needs a quarterback that can win the big game.

about Xs and Os while coach tressel was setteling for field goals USCs offensive coordinator stated and i quote “they cant stop us, there is no roof on the celieng we are gonna try to score 100 points”. Thats the big difference until coach tressel change his mentality and get some other coachs that has a mentality that we cant be stopped its gonna be the same stroy every year.

I think tressel is a great man and a great role model off of the football field. When it comes to stepping on the field on game day you have to have another switch you cant be a gentelman on game day you have to go for the kill and let them know that TOSU means business and we takin no prisoners. Thats the biggest thing from TOSU and the other elite programs right now such as Florida USC Oklahoma. The mentality of the coachs and players showed its self when Osu played USC this year. It wasnt

Pitch Tressel.

No one can deny this now. His coordinators are hideous, yet he continues to hold on to them. Tressel himself has to be the worst offensive play caller in college football.

I say again, worst senior class in Ohio State History: -5 big games in their last 2+ years, 5 losses, most were flat out embarrassments. -Unless you measure yourself versus Northwestern and Minnesota there’s no other way to look at them. They are failures on the football field.

Facts are facts. These

Unfortunatly loosing is part of the game. It is obvious that Tressel has kept loosing to a minimum. His winning percentage is among the elite programs across the country. He continues to bring in top rated recruits. He has managed to stay away from NCAA infrations, one of the few programs to be able to do so. While there have been times where you have to wonder why they called a play or even a game, he has done an outstanding job and has put tOSU in a better standing.

THE BUCKS NEED A OFFENSIVE CORDINATOR! THE LAST TOUCHDOWN [BLAME ON THE DEFENSIVE CALL] WHO PULLS THE LINBACKERS UP IN THERE THAT CLOSE WHEN THERE IS 20 SOME YARDS TO THE GOAL —BAD CALL— YOU GOT TO COVER

people must be drunk to bash tressel——there is not a university pres or a.d. at a reputable school in america that wouldn’t give anything to have tressel represent their school and work with thier student athletes—-you bashers should grow up and get a life—— you deserve a huggins

JT needs an offensive coord.fresh blood would not hurt. But the coach does not need to go unless we can’t beat the school up north.

There isn’t a debate. Tressel has gone 83-18 since he came to Ohio State, and they have been in the National Championship picture since his second year. They weren’t even close to this level in the Jim Cooper era, and the difference is winning bowl games and beating Michigan. They are outrecruiting everyone. There will be more national championships, and it will silence this stupid talk about the Big Ten’s alleged inferiority. Look at how many many Ohio State stars are stars in the NFL.
