Ohio State recruiting class called No. 1

— Staff and Wire Reports

Wednesday, February 04, 2009

Jim Tressel is poised to sign what likely will be the highest-rated recruiting class of his nine at Ohio State, according to the rankings of recruiting service Rivals.com.

Scout.com and Rivals.com placed this class No. 1 in the nation entering national signing day today, Feb. 4. Like last year's class, this one has a heavy Pennsylvania flavor at the top. Linebacker Dorian Bell and cornerback/receiver Corey Brown, both of Monroeville (Gateway), Pa., are considered five-star prospects by Rivals.

The only player the Buckeyes are waiting to hear from this year is elite receiver prospect Marlon Brown of Memphis (Harding Academy), Tenn. He'll announce his choice at 3:45 p.m. from among OSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi.

Even without him, the Buckeyes' 2009 class of 26 players is loaded, said Jeremy Crabtree, national recruiting editor for Rivals. It might be overtaken in the final rankings after today by LSU, Alabama or Southern California, he said, but a top-five ranking is still stout. The 2002 Ohio State class was ranked fifth by Rivals, highest so far in the Tressel era.

"This class is about as balanced a group as you're going to find, and not just in the Big Ten but nationally," Crabtree said. "You are not going to find a more balanced and deep group anywhere in the country, and the Buckeyes did a great job not only filling their needs, but filling them with high-quality kids."
