Mullens to leave OSU, enter NBA draft

From wire and staff reports

Thursday, March 26, 2009

COLUMBUS — B.J. Mullens is the latest "one and done" at Ohio State.

The 7-foot freshman announced Thursday, March 26, he would declare himself available for the NBA draft, the fifth Buckeyes player in the last three seasons to leave after playing one year.

"After long consideration I have decided to enter my name in the 2009 NBA Draft," Mullens said in a release by OSU.

"This was not an easy choice because I love Ohio State University but the many positive reasons for moving on outweigh the many good reasons for staying."

The Columbus-area native averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, and shot 64 percent from the field to set a school freshman record. He started two of the 33 games this past season for the Buckeyes, who lost to Siena in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

After Ohio State went 35-4 and lost in the national championship game to Florida two years ago, freshmen Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook all were taken in the first round of the NBA draft. Last season, 7-foot freshman Kosta Koufos jumped and was drafted by Utah.

OSU coach Thad Matta, who has had to basically rebuild the program each of the last three seasons, said he was disappointed that Mullens was leaving early.

"I am saddened to lose B.J.," Matta said. "On one hand, I feel another year in school would have allowed him to develop into the player I know he can be and an additional season would have been beneficial to him both personally and monetarily in the long run.

"On the other hand, I am empathetic to the reasons why he has chosen to leave at such an early point in his career. I wish him nothing but the best and know he will always be a part of our basketball family at Ohio State."

Mullens' decision was hardly a secret. He had a turbulent childhood and lived for a time in a homeless shelter. After the Buckeyes' NCAA loss, he spoke of his college career in the past tense. Nonetheless, he said the decision was difficult.

Mullens was a standout at Canal Winchester H.S. He put a prep career high 62 points on Our Savior New American in the 2008 Flyin' to the Hoop tourney at Fairmont's Trent Arena.

My mistake it should have been 18 minutes not 28.

While I agree BJ could use more seasoning with another year. Keep in mind that he only averaged 28 minutes a game. Also most good teams have good point guards. I found it distressing that OSU couldn’t even get the ball across the mid court line against Sienna. I think Matta is a great recruiter and a lousy coach. Bj can make millions sitting on the bench in the NBA or make nothing sitting on the bench at OSU

Does anyone know if B.J. Mullens signed with an agent?

Nothing but questions have surrounded this guy from the beginning. He obviously carries an attitude and when given the opportunity to play showed little to no enthusiasm for the game. As for the one and done that plagues all colleges and universities; It would take one constructive meeting between the university athletic directors, school presidents and the NBA to resolve the issue. Why it will never happen? You can just smell the attorneys salivating over the law suits that would follow!

ohio state already has a center for next year. Zsis Sarikoupilous is anouther 7 footer from greece and he has a better inside game than kosta and is more mature than mullens. mullens has a lot of potential but he was always out of position in osu’s zone defense. he should have stayed but i think after going up against the transfer Zsis everyday he must have realized he was gonna lose his job to him next season.

I am normally against a kid quitting college to turn pro in any sport. They are throwing away their long term interests for short term gains. But Mullins seems to have a unique situation. But he was not a dominant presence on the court and a 7 foot center should be, if the NBA is his target. I predict he will be playing in Europe next year.

I dont think he is ready AT ALL. My dad seen J.J. Sullinger yesterday at the Columbus Northland state game and asked him to talk to BJ and J.J. feels the same way we all do. Greg oden was a difference maker even though he is struggling in the NBA the guy controlled everything that came his way in the paint. Kosta dont let me get started on him he was outright horrible i dont even count him as a OSU player. BJ has the potential if he just be patient. As for D.Cook no i dont think he was ready

Quick everyone! Besides the dunk which pivot position shot has Mullins accomplished? A hook, a fade-away jumper, can he go left, ahh hell you guys know the answer. He has no real game other than being fairly coordinated, decent jumping skills. But is he an effective rebounder, mano-mano?? Hell no to most questions? Before freshman were varsity eligible, he would have done just fine playing other freshman teams and getting ready for next season’s schedule in the Big Ten much less preparing theNBA

I hope the next big man that Matta tries to recruit realizes That Matta held Mullens back and tells Ohio State to stick it. BTW, Jeff is an Idiot: your name fits. And Patrick; who the hell died and made you an expert?

Purvis, Purvis, Purvis…FYI D. Cook didn’t start for OSU either. Matta seems to do a good job of trying to keep players on the bench. Mullins should have been a starter. Scouts have said that Matta tries to keep kids like Mullins and Cook on the sideling to get another year. D. Cook is one of the best shooters in the NBA. It’s obvious you don’t know the game because you didn’t know that and you didn’t even know his name! The money may or may not last forever! Get it while you can!

What a joke.. BJ Mullins was the biggest disappointment of the OSU season this year… Much Hyped but couldn’t even beat out Dallas Lauderdale at the 5… Some NBA team will throw money at a kid who will sit at the end of the bench for 3 years and then become a journeyman playing in Europe… Whatever advice this kid is getting is bad advice… Chris Johnson from Columbus was a much better Freshman than Mullins who was soft and unskilled…

I have mixed emotions. I enjoyed watching Mullins and I know he is good, but I feel he needs a little more seasoning. I don’t know what is on his personal agenda which may have much to do with the jump. I wish him the best and maybe he can find a 7 footer to replace him.

I have said for some time that if someone had offered me money to play professional sports when I was in college, then I would have been out of there! Due to a lack of talent, it did not happen. My real complaint is that as a fan of OSU, the school is having too many 1 and done players and, in the end, I think it will hurt the program.

The whole objective of going to college is to hopefully increase your chances of earning more money. Where as I think Mullins is not ready for the NBA, I do believe that his decision to leave for financial rewards is the reason why we attend college. Those of us who are critical of his decision don’t have any idea of what could have happened to him if he came back (perhaps a career ending injury). Who would be willing to compensate him on the millions that he probably is coing to make?

Look, this kid’s family is in dire straits. In his position, I’d do the same thing so I could support my family. The Columbus Dispatch did a wonderful, yet sad piece on him recently. As soon as I read about his family situation, I knew he should go for the money. The NBA (and NFL) needs a real minor league system like baseball and NHL so kids not interested in college can go from H.S. to the minors to develop, make money and have time to mature as a person.

Too bad for B.J. Mullins. Not an intelligent decision. Anyone watching him play this year knows he’s not ready. Anyone that is except for a money hungry agent! Somehow the colleges have to address this issue of 1 or 2 and out. They need to confer with the pro leagues and get them on board. At the minimun do what the NFL does.

Hey Purvis, The kid from Dunbar you referred to was Daquan Cook, and the last I checked he was the three-point champ during All Star weekend. I think he’s doing alright! But, it is a joke for Mullins to think he’s ready. I guess getting a few dollars up-front is worth throwing your college career and eduaction away. Where’s the parental and coach’s advice, here. Given his history (RE the posts about his behavior) he may be dancing to a differnt drummer, though and not listening to anyone.

BJ hasn’t got a clue as to what he’s about to do. All he see’s is the money. He’s weak for a 7 footer and what makes him think he’s ready when Oden is struggling like he is. I blame the NBA for allowing kids this young to turn pro. rules should change to where you should at least be a sophomore before you declare and probably even a junior. There are your rare exceptions like Kobe and LeBron, but they are few and far between. BJ get your education you knumb nut before you end up homeless again!

I saw B.J. Mullens play in the Regional finals at the Nutter Center last season. He played against my old High School, Graham High School. Graham shut him down and he fouled out. When he found out he had a few choice word for our fans. That is when I saw his true colors as a player. He won’t be ready for the NBA because he can’t handle the physical play with the big boys.

Oden wasn’t ready, Koufous wasn’t ready, for that matter neither was Conley or whatever the guys name that played High School for Dunbar..what makes BJ think he’s ready…he wasn’t even starting….wow…good luck to you guys, the money if you can get a good deal won’t last forever…maybe all you guys one season and out should go play in Europe…you wouldn’t fair well there either.

Good luck to B.J.. He is not ready and all of us “experts” know that. He has NBA height and body size now. Too bad! The NBA is to blame for something like this happening. Who in their right mind would turn down millions of dollars. He will make more for signing his name than most of us will make in a life time. Again good luck but I hate to see you leave.

How can you blame Matta? If Mullens was half the center Oden was the offense would have filtered into him. B.J. is soft. He cost OSU the game against Sienna by not rebounding. And by the way, he’s leaving OSU because he would have flunked out anyway. OSU will be better without him. Mullens will get drafted and will sit on a bench for 5 years.

Blame Matta for him leaving. Matta’s lack of offensive knowledge has killed OSU. 4 guards standing at the 3-point line and shooting 25% collectively is not an offense.

8.8 ppg? Wow!! I’m not even sure that will qualify him for the D league.

…..Also wanted to say that the only reason he will be a first rounder in the NBA is because the lack of big man in the Draft. But none the less, I hope he proves me wrong and has much success.

Looks like back to the homeless shelter after he fails in the NBA. I watched him play and he has A LOT!!! of work to do before he is ready. Look how Greg Oden has struggled after one year in college and Koufos?? where is he?? Not a good move. I feel for Thad Matta and OSU players who do stay 4 years and put there heart and soul into the program working year after year to get ahead and be back on top only to have players like this come through and set them back.

Mullins is not NBA ready and should stay and build his skills. As an OSU fan, it is tough watching players walking out after only one year. There are good recruits coming in each year, but we can’t develop junior/senior leadership with so many players leaving early. The lack of experience was evident in this year’s NCAA tournament.

Maybe BJ can join Koufos in the D-League. This clown has been saying he doesn’t need an education since the 7th grade because he was going to be 7 feet tall. Well good luck with all 7 feet of you.

This kid is going to be good, but he is nowhere near ready for the NBA. He showed flashes this year, but could never put it together consistently. It is sad that these guys can’t just enjoy themselves for a few years at college before they join the NBA. The money will be there, learn to play in college, and “grow up” later!
