DAYTON — Dayton junior point guard Andres Sandoval scored the last of his career-high 21 points with eight seconds left against George Washington and then unveiled some dance moves that would have made Chad Johnson proud.

Sandoval raised his fist and shook his hips after making a layup while drawing a foul, and 11,622 fans were rocking to the imaginary beat, too.

Extras

"That was just me being excited," he said. "I'm an excitable player. I like to play with energy. That's the way we need to play all the time — with energy."

The Flyers brought ample energy in pulling out an 84-69 win over the Atlantic 10's first-place team Wednesday. They closed with a 19-4 run in the final 4:30, helped immensely by a pair of technical fouls from combustible GW coach Karl Hobbs.

He was T'd for the first time with UD nursing a 73-67 lead with 1:31 to go. As Brian Roberts was shooting the subsequent free throws, Hobbs drew another tech and was tossed.

He wouldn't discuss the play that drew his ire, although Monty Scott appeared to get away with a slight shove during a scrap for a defensive rebound.

"We just lost to a better basketball team," he said, fending off three questions about the eruption. "There's a reason why we were picked to finish fifth in this league, and, tonight, we showed it."

The Flyers (14-7, 4-4) showed they're not content with the preseason predictions that had them finishing sixth, hiking their record at home to 13-0 and snapping a four-game losing streak to GW (15-5, 6-2). Roberts had 23 points, and Scott and Charles Little had 10 apiece.

"Our guys played with a real fire," UD coach Brian Gregory said, "and that was great to see."

Stat of the game

Sandoval had a near-flawless floor game (a team-high six assists with just two turnovers), and the Flyers, who were sixth in the A-10 in 3-point shooting (36.7 percent), hit 10 of 16 bombs.

Turning point

Tied at 65-all with 4:30 to go, Little ignited a 6-0 run with a rebound dunk. Sandoval then scored on a fastbreak layup and a 15-foot jumper while the Flyer defense produced three straight stops.
