A Gem City Jam, courtesy of the NIT? It could happen

Could it happen? A postseason Gem City Jam?

Don't hold your breath, college basketball fans in and around Dayton. It would take some unusual circumstances. But never say never.

Extras

Although the University of Dayton won't play Wright State in a home-and-home regular-season arrangement (and doesn't want to run the risk of being beaten by the Raiders, they of a lower-rated conference) what would happen if circumstances worked out that both teams were selected to play in this year's NIT?

And what if the NIT, keeping those first-round games local, put Wright State and UD together?

And what if WSU, with a better overall record, would wind up as the host team?

Take that, UD.

When you consider the NIT has a history of giving the team that draws the best at home the first-round home games, such an incredible matchup would probably end up at UD Arena. Traditionally, the Flyer fans have supported their team better and the arena has a larger seating capacity (13,266 to the Nutter Center's approximate 11,000).

Before you get too excited, we hope both teams make the NCAA Tournament. With year-end tournaments, it certainly could happen for either team. And that would be great for either one or both.

But just in case it doesn't take place, and just in case both should happen to be picked for the NIT, get out your pens, fans, and write: Dear NIT, please bring back the Gem City Jam.
