About Dayton
Brian Roberts is now 14th on UD's all-time scoring list with 1,566 points, passing Ramod Marshall and Johnny Davis during a 31-point effort against Pitt. Next up are Jack Sallee (1,610) and Bill Uhl Sr. (1,627). Roberts is shooting 50.3 percent from the field, 49.3 on 3-pointers and 87.0 from the foul line. He also has 55 assists, while no one else on the team has more than 19. The Flyers are shooting 48.0 percent from the floor after connecting at a 44.6 clip last season. UD has won 10 straight games, its longest winning streak since racking up 11 in a row in 1989-90.
About Akron
The Zips have won five straight games and are off to their best start since joining Division I in 1980-81. They've beaten Temple and Wyoming at home and Austin Peay on the road. They average 21.8 three-point attempts per game. The hustling Dials was a walk-on at Ohio State as a freshman in 2003-04 and played significantly, averaging 4.5 points and 2.1 assists. The Zips just missed the NCAA tournament last season, losing on a last-second shot in the MAC finals to Miami. They finished 26-7 and returned three starters.
FYI
The Flyers are ranked 20th and Rhode Island, which visits Dayton on Jan. 9, is 23rd in the Associated Press Top 25 this week. The Atlantic 10 hasn't had two teams in the national polls since UD and Saint Joseph's were ranked in December 2003.
Quote, unquote
"In a lot of ways, they mirror us — they play great defense, they push the ball and pressure the ball as well," UD coach Brian Gregory said of the Zips.
