Wright out at least 4-6 weeks
UD freshman star broke his ankle Wednesday night and is set for surgery Monday.
> What does this mean for UD?

DAYTON — University of Dayton freshman star Chris Wright will be sidelined at least four to six weeks after fracturing his right ankle during Wednesday's game against Rhode Island.
Wright was injured when he landed awkwardly on a reverse layup early in the first half. He's tentatively scheduled to have surgery Monday to implant two screws into the right medial malleolus (on the inside of the ankle), according to Dr. Tim Quinn, UD's orthopedic consultant.
Extras
"This is a very fixable type of orthopedic problem," Quinn said. "Hopefully, within four to six weeks, he's back playing and will do great and will help the team."
The Flyers' second-leading scorer and top rebounder has been hampered by an ankle injury for more than a month. He missed a game Dec. 22 and played just 14 minutes in each of the next two contests.
"This is a difficult situation for a young athlete to be faced with," UD coach Brian Gregory said. "But the most important thing right now is that Chris gets healthy."
The injury was first diagnosed as a deep bone bruise, and Quinn believes it may have led to an ankle fracture.
"In hindsight ... his bone was a little weakened, and it was sort of the wrong-force-at-the-wrong-time situation. That's what caused it," Quinn said. The Flyers have won 12 straight — their longest streak since winning 14 in a row in 1967-68 — and are ranked 17th nationally. But they're just getting into the meat of Atlantic 10 Conference play.
Wright, who wasn't available for comment, averaged 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds in his first nine games and was named the A-10 rookie of the week four times. His averages are down to 10.4 points and 6.0 boards.
"I asked him how his spirits were, and he said he's fine," said the Rev. J.D. Grigsby, Wright's uncle. "I just shared with him that this is the 'world' and we have to keep fighting every day."
A positive will come out of this negative, without a doubt," added Grigsby, a Flyers star in the early 1970s.

I am really enjoying this season and the excitement !! This is by far the best thing going on in Dayton right now, I hope everyone from every community will get together and continue to support and keep this going for years to come.

The best thing about this year is that all of our opponents still underestimate us in light of the trail of destruction this team is leaving in it’s wake. Check out every opponents message board before the game, and they all say that they only need to stop Brian Roberts to win. First they find out that they cannot stop Roberts, and then the attention that they heap upon stopping him gives the other players wide open lanes. We have a different supporting cast star every game.

Response to 21: 1) I follow the RPI daily 2) It is possible that they lose more than 4 games in a tough A10 3) You said “UD could lose 10 more and still make the tourney”. If that happened, the Flyers would be at 18-11 entering the A10 tourney, and they most likely would have to win the conference tourney in that case. 6-10 in conference would most definately hurt. Regardless, I stated that I hope the Flyers go AT LEAST 9-6 the rest of the way and would be a worst case scenario.

A couple of points from up north… 1) I’m very skeptical of poster Chris’ claim about his knowledge of UD Medical staff. This lacks class. 2) As a Chicagoan and UD grad, I’ve never seen any reason whatsoever for UD to play Wright State. The local interest angle should mean absolutely nothing to UD. The emphasis should continue to be to schedule teams like Pitt & UL. If and until WSU gets to the NCAA multiple times & wins, sells out Nutter regularly, and gets a TV audience, fend for yourself.

A wreckless, selfish mis-diagnosis. How could they be so careless with possibly the best player in school history? UD’s best years are still to come, only if CW is around.

Chris is My homeboy, i know that he is a competitor and he hates being off the court, but he needs to rest that ankle, so it will heal correctly and the rest of the flyers will step up and play to the best of there ability because of the injury….Top Flyght will be back soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!believe they will make some noise in the tournament!!!

I’m more concerned about Chris than I am the team. He will lose valuable playing experience in the A-10. His development as a D-I player will fall behind schedule and next season, practically speaking, he’ll be a freshman again. Ouch!

I have been waiting for this type of team from Dayton for a while now. In the past they were good, but they could not close games out. But finally they have got the leadership and strength to put teams away for good. UD is ranked 14 in ESPN’s power 16. They are getting noticed. Even without Chris Wright they will win the A-10 regular season crown. Bring it on XAVIER!

They are absolutely the team in Beavercreek and the team to beat in Dayton. The Gem City Jam needs to start back up again next year, Dayton basketball is coming back strong, and what better way to show that than to bring back the Jam.
Unless UD is scared?

The one thing I’ve been impressed with this year’s Flyer team is their resiliency. Teams have been throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Brian Roberts defensively and other guys on the team step up to make big baskets. Marques Johnson, London Warren, Andres Sandovol, Kurt Huelsman, Jimmy Binnie, Charles Little, Mickey Perry, Cordiero. This is a TEAM!! They are mentally tough and a hard working group. They will get thru this until Chris gets healthy.

I hope that coach will put Mickey Perry in more. He has had the chance to do it but didn’t at Coppin, American and Loyola Now is the time for someone with his ability and experience to step up

x will crush UD, the Flyers will go on a losing streak and all this will be forgotten. Wright State is Dayton’s basketball team now.

We will really know how good this team is once they play Xavier. Cincy radio keeps saying Xavier is a final 4 team. I think they will change their minds once they play Dayton. This team is the best I have seen in years. I hope this city gets behind them and makes the arena even a tougher place to play!!! I looks like ESPN and others are finally jumping on the UD bandwagon….its about time!!!

Frankly a fracture is better than a sprain from a healing perspective. With the sprain the player is going to want to be on the court. Not possible when you are in a cast. High ankle sprains take so long to properly heal. He will be surgically repaired, rehabbed properly and be ready in six weeks. Tough loss but as others are saying there seems to be enough depth to deal with the setback. Mickey Perry may see some more time as well. I was fairly impressed with his contribution against RI.

They will be fine without Wright for now. the best thing is for hime tio get healthy. 4-6 weeks would be just in time for the NCAA’s. This just means that Johnson and Little need to keep stepping it up. A very good thing out of this is that while his leg is in a cast you know he will be shooting on the side. It won’t be 100% or even 50% but he really needs to work on his form and follow through. I have seen athletes really use this time to better themselves if you can believe it.

Am I the only one who was yelling at the TV for Gregory to take a time out and get Wright out of the game after the layup? They went up and down the court two more times before Wright could be subbed out, and it was obvious he was hurt.

The Flyers continue to impress me, their mental toughness and refusal to give in when leads are lost. In hindsight, maybe we should have had Chris sit out, you just have to trust the doctors and I’m sure Chris thought he could go.
Injuries build a strong bench…Best of luck Chris and you are in the hands of Alter’s finest (Dr. Tim Quinn)
Go Flyers!

Matt, do you have any idea what UD’s RPI is? It is 4th in the country. When they beat ST. Louis Saturday they will be ranked about 13. If they can beat L’Ville, Pitt at home and the best team they have played this year in Rhode Island, they won’t lose more the 4 AT MOST. UD could lose 10 more and still make the tourney. CW hasn’t played much at all for the past month as it is and UD has done fine. Don’t get me wrong losing CW is a bad thing, but the other guys will have to pick it up

UD medical staff should have rested him longer…with a weak bone in your ankle that young man shouldn’t have been playing.
My experience with the staff is they are incompetent.

Priority #1 is to get healthy Chris. Your teammates will adjust in the short term and your return will be a boost in March.

Very disappointing for Chris Wright. Hopefully, the foot will heal nicely and he can resume what appears to be a very promising career. For the team, injuries are part of the game (look at Louisville and Pittsburgh), and they have to play on. Based on the last 4-5 games, including Pitt, Gregory had built a team that has a tremendous amount of depth, with great senior leadership from Roberts, Binnie and Sandoval. I think this team will fight its way into the tourney.

Assumin Wright misses the rest of the regular season, I’m hoping the Flyers can go at least 9-6 the rest of the way and win a couple in the conference tourney so they can still get an NCAA at large bid w/o having to win the conference tourney. Hopefully Wright will have a few games to gear up for the NCAA tournament as I believe the Flyers have the potential to make a nice run in the NCAA tourney with him in the lineup.
