THE AUDIBLE COMMENTARY

Maybe UD and WSU will finally meet ... in the NIT

Staff Writer

Thursday, March 06, 2008

If you could pick just one of the following three scenarios, which would you choose?

A. The Wright State Raiders make the NCAA tournament.

Extras

B. The Dayton Flyers make the NCAA tournament.

C. A UD-WSU matchup in the opening round of the NIT at UD Arena.

I'd take "C" because I follow both programs and would love to see 'em play.

I'm confident neither will make the Big Dance. The Raiders are out of gas and runnin' on fumes. The Flyers, minus Chris Wright, have been going downhill since their 14th victory in their 15th game.

A 20-person panel of college basketball experts selected UD's Brian Gregory as the winner of the midseason Jim Phelan Coach of the Year Award.

I'd like to present WSU's Brad Brownell with the end-season Chick Ludwig Coach of the Year Award.

What the 21-9 Raiders have accomplished without 2007 Horizon League Player of the Year DaShaun Wood is nothing short of astounding. They're 6-0 in one-point games. Their all-out hustle and brand of team ball cover up a lot of mistakes.

I credit Brownell and his staff for working Houdini-like magic.

The Flyers leave you hungry with questions. When are Jimmy Binnie and Kurt Huelsman going to step forward? Where's the depth that's supposed to accompany Brian Roberts? When is Charles Little going to realize his future's in the NFL, not the NBA?

I don't fault one guy. There's plenty of blame to go around.
