OSU notes: Chris Wright and the Buckeyes

COLUMBUS — Thad Matta knows who Chris Wright is but doesn't really consider him a recruit that got away.
"He's a great athlete, scores in a lot of different ways," the Ohio State men's basketball coach said Tuesday, March 25. "He drives the ball and finishes around the basket."

But the University of Dayton's prized freshman apparently didn't get a lot of consideration from the Buckeyes.
"I knew who he was," Matta said. "But we really didn't recruit him."
The Buckeyes will see Wright — just back from injury — and the Flyers at 9 p.m. today in an NIT quarterfinal game at the Schottenstein Center.
"I just know he's real athletic," OSU's David Lighty said of Wright. "He was like their hustle man early in the season."
When asked how much he expected Wright to play, Matta said: "I would imagine as much as they need him to."
TV more important to OSU than state rivalries
The Ohio State football team has been playing in-state opponents regularly, though none regularly scare the Buckeyes.
Matta said OSU's hoops schedule is a year-to-year issue and indicated that big TV games are more important than just adding Ohio teams like Dayton.
"So much more goes into it with television than meets the eye, especially your major networks — CBS, Big Ten, ESPN — those type of networks," said Matta, deftly walking the conference's company line.
"The reason we don't play Ohio teams is so I don't have to answer all these questions," Matta half-joked. "Geez, we play (one) and you want two, we play two and you want three."
Matta pointed out OSU has played Kent State, Youngstown, Cleveland State, Cincinnati and Xavier in his tenure and has UD on tap. Of course, it took postseason tourney matchups for the Buckeyes to meet the Musketeers and Flyers.
Troy's Twig ready for last stand at OSU
Troy graduate Matt Terwilliger makes his final home appearance at OSU tonight. He's a self-deprecating fan favorite who has developed a strong outside shot and even dived out of bounds going for steals against California on Monday night.
"I think that you look from where he started and the lessons that he learned early in his career to right now, without a doubt, I think he's playing his best basketball," Matta said. "He's got the most confidence that he's ever had. He knows what his role is. He's doing a great job of it."
He and fellow senior Jamar Butler have won more career games than any other OSU players. "This one really is my last home game," Terwilliger said. "It's got to come to an end sometime, so I guess it might as well come against a team like Dayton."
No help from Xavier — scout's honor
Matta said he didn't get the scoop on the Flyers from Xavier coach Sean Miller, Matta's close friend.
"It's conference rules that they can't give us any information," Matta said. "However, last year when we played Xavier (in the NCAA tourney), Xavier told us after the game, 'Yeah, everybody told us what to do to you guys.'
We follow the rules here."
