DAYTON — Dayton has improved on the road, having won three straight games and seven overall, but the most important road success of the season may have been one that will never appear on the team's record.
One week into preseason practice, UD coach Brian Gregory loaded the Flyers on a bus for an overnight trip to Indianapolis, putting them through a workout at Marian College that was as taxing mentally as it was physically.

"For lack of a better term, that one-day session was kind of like basic training," Gregory said. "You've got to test the guys to the limit and show them they can do that."
The Flyers lost their first eight games on the road last season, finishing 2-9. Gregory believes his players were slow to grasp how much more effort and intensity they need when venturing from UD Arena, and he made sure they left Indianapolis with a better understanding.
"I thought that was going to be a key to the season, knowing who we were playing on the road and how tough the league was going to be," Gregory said. "We got them away from campus and spent some good time together.
"We had a four-hour practice that Saturday morning, and it was brutal, but our guys kept coming back for more and more. They kind of knew what we were doing, and they weren't going to give in."
The Flyers (23-10) are coming off a road win Monday, March 24, having beaten Illinois State, 55-48, to advance to the NIT quarterfinals. They'll visit Ohio State (21-13) tonight with a berth in the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden on the line.
The seven road victories so far match the highest total at UD since the 1966-67 team went 8-3. The 1969-70, 2000-01 and 2002-03 teams also won seven road games.
Senior guard Brian Roberts believes that boot-camp experience set the tone.
"We all went out there not knowing what to expect," he said. "We practiced hard and got after it. We accomplished what the coach wanted, to get us ready to play in different places and different circumstances."
