OHIO STATE 74, DAYTON 63

UD's season fades away at Ohio State

Leading by one at halftime, the Flyers couldn't keep up when Buckeyes' shooters got hot in the second half.

To overcome Ohio State's edge in manpower, Dayton needed to get solid performances from its role players and hope the Buckeyes had a frigid shooting night, something that hasn't been all that rare this season.

Neither happened.

Extras

OSU broke open a snug game with a 17-4 second-half run on the way to a 74-63 victory Wednesday, March 26 at the Schottenstein Center before a sellout crowd of 19,049, including several thousand vocal Dayton fans.

Led by 7-footer Kosta Koufas' 21 points, the Buckeyes (22-13) advanced to the NIT semifinals against Mississippi (24-10) on Tuesday at either 7 or 9:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Brian Roberts scored 20 points for the Flyers (23-11), while freshman Chris Wright had 12 points in 18 minutes.

The Buckeyes took control early in the second half with the help of a lineup switch. OSU put four guards on the floor, inserting freshman Jon Diebler for power forward Othello Hunter.

Ohio's Mr. Basketball last season, the slump-ridden Diebler was shooting just 30.2 percent from the field and 28.6 from 3-point land, but he hit a pair of treys as the Buckeyes turned a 36-35 lead into a 53-39 edge with just over 10 minutes to go.

The Flyers missed nine of their first 12 second-half shots and trailed by as many as 18 before a late spurt.

Guard Jamar Butler had 12 points and Diebler 10 (four above his average). The Buckeyes hit 13 of their first 19 flings in the second half and shot 53.2 percent overall.

The Flyers had a 31-26 lead with 1:18 left in the first half, but they were blanked on their last three possessions, allowing OSU to cut the gap to 31-30.

Roberts had 11 first-half points, making 3-of-5 3-pointers. Wright chipped in six points in seven first-half minutes.

The Flyers jumped out to a 14-11 lead, getting 3-pointers from Roberts and Marcus Johnson, but the Buckeyes answered with a 7-1 run, and the pro-OSU crowd began making a ruckus and never stopped.

At the end, Frank Sinatra's ballad, "New York, New York," reverberated throughout the arena — the next stop for the Buckeyes.

Forget all the technical talk about RPI ratings, SOS ratings. What UD needs is more offensive players. Huelsman, Binnie, Warren, and Searcy have no offensive presence on the court. Huelsmann, I think, is the worst big man UD has ever recruited. I’ve seen centers come and go at UD, from Westerkamp, Chimilewski, O’Bravac to Ed Young. Huelsmann is the most inept…..zero presence. Roberts was a great player. Wright will have to expand his game, like being able to make some outside shots. Bueno!

Didn’t anyone else notice how we got homered in the 2nd half? I think the refs had different calls at least 3 times and it went OSU’s way every time. I hope OSU doesn’t go lose to either SEC team in NY. I’m so sick of the SEC fans shilling for any SEC team. Unfortunately I don’t think the Buckeyes are very good. UD would have easily beat them in Dayton, which is where this game should have been played. UD’s #3 seed was absurd. The seeding in the NIT matters a lot when you get 3 home games.

I just want to clear up that Roosevelt Chapman would have never posted that comment below. First of all, he is very supportive of the Flyer basketball program. Whoever signed his name to that post must not attend games at the arena or they would know he was at almost every home game this season. Also, he doesn’t live in Florida, he lives north of Dayton and that is where he watched the game, not listened to it on a radio. Roosevelt is a very gracious man and would never make those comments.

I see that some of you have hit close to the nail. BG was out coached by Matta. Matta is one of the best ever at halftime adjustments and it appeared that our coach did not address this at half. All the moves made by OSU were very evident to me as I watched on TV. Counter moves were either really late or not at all ergo OSU has large run!!

I haven’t followed Flyer basketball for 20 years, but watching this game from Florida afar I swear I could hear Chris Harris and Bucky Bockhorn on my transistor radio. Same old Dayton: Coach good enough to lose the big one, a couple of stiffs (though oddly not one from Alter High School) and a stud or two who slipped through the cracks and ended up under the blue dome. This is about as good as it will ever get for the Flyers. You can’t beat Patrick Ewing with Ed Young.

What I saw last night was typical UD basketball. Play hard, tough, be competitive for part of the game then just implode right when some toughness is needed. Will this ever change?

Good to see a few sensible folks out there like End User and Middleman etc. Enough is enough with Coach Hot Seat…start the ground swell for removal here. Maybe a few of the delusional below will jump on board. We all want a competitive D1 team in UD. News flash we have no national respect and we showed why many times this year such as last night. It will never happen with coach Hot Seat.

Right On to Middleman. He hit the nail right on the head about Hot Seat. But unfortunately for the Good Old Flyer Faithfull nothing is going to change and there isn’t anything they can do about it.

A total bummer. OSU had an incredibly Hot night from the field, which is RARE. Yes, OSU adjusted more than UD for the second half. I am not sure that OSU is the better team. They just had a better night. It’ll just be twenty years before UD gets to play the overhyped Buckeyes again.

The season ended last night, and we all feel a little down. There is always next year, and we can all keep thinking what could have been, or maybe we can start thinking about what is to come.We all now hope that next year brings in fresh new options that can be counted on in pressure situations, but only time will tell.B-Rob, it’s too bad you could not have play with a few better players during your time here, but you made the most of it. For that we all thank you.Same Time next year..

I was surrounded by OSU fans in the Shott last night who were impressed with our play the first half, but kept asking questions the second half about every aspect of the team including the constant subbing - and especially coming out of timeouts without any noticeable play strategy. They also wondered why we were not attacking their big guys who were in foul trouble? Even they recognized our need for a new coach!

I watched the game from the 2nd row and it was a very intense, physical battle. I was frustrated by UD’s lineup in the second half. They needed their most athletic team on the floor to compete but Gregory didn’t adjust. Huelsman, Warren and Binnie just couldn’t keep up — boys against men.

To OSU’s credit, they played very well. If they continue with the same quality of play, they’ll win the tournament.

Dayton had 2 TERRIFIC players last night. It’s a shame Wright couldn’t play more of the game. My concern for the Flyers is that they also have 2 or 3 not so good at all players who necessarily get much playing time. UD simply needs 1, 2, or 3 better players to compliment its talent and lift the program.

UD played very well for most of the first half, while Ohio State looked off-balance offensively for much of that half. Obviously, the halftime adjustments were key, and the second half play of Deibler and Evan Turner were, in my opinion, the difference in the key second half start. UD has nothing to hang its head about — still a heck of a season. Not sure what to say about Gregory’s coaching, but I’ve read others’ previous comments crtical of him.

Hey Bones…I have a block of Wisconsin cheddar at home which would go nicely with your whine. I, too, am glad you’re a Flyer and not a Buckeye. Your team couldn’t get it done against Goliath. And you people wonder why we don’t play you on a regular basis. Have a nice offseason.

Fatigue and politics cost the Flyers. I think having to play at Illinois State and returning late after the game on Tuesday morning, then busing to Columbus was a huge factor. If Dayton had been seeded higher, as they should have been, the Flyers would have survived. Why Dayton with a higher RPI, a better SOS and a better record against the top 100 than Ohio State was seeded below the Buckeyes is unsure. I think politics was the reason! I’m still proud to say I’m a Flyer & not a Buckeye!

Well put John P. Hopefully Rita and Me read your input. While it was a good and exciting season which we all love…this coach cannot teach fundamentals and as you stated Old Hot Seat seems to have problems understanding what needs to be done. I never judge on talent (not fair not everyone has that) but everyone is expected to think i.e. Butler & WSU. If the fundamentals were there it would have been a great season which makes Rita’s comments damaging to the UD system.

A tale of two halfs. Matta made adjustments at halftime and Gregory didn’t match them. Poor job by the refs too. Still trying to figure out the charge call against OSU and then that OSU player shooting foul shots.

Gregory was badly outcoached coming out of the locker room for the second half. Changing to London Warren to run the point for the first 10 minutes, was a very poor decision. Brian Roberts was dominating the game in the 1st half from the point. BR, Wright, Little/Searcy, Johnson was our best lineup in the 1st half. Yet Binnie, Warren/Sandoval, and Huelsman played most of the first 10 minutes of the 2nd. (All of whom did not play well at all in the 1st half) Ugggg.

Dayton’s # 3 seed finally bit them. That’s why Ted Kissel was complaining. Put OSU in the UD Arena and see if the Buckeyes would play so free and easy. It was a bitter sweet game. Bitter because Brian Robert’s career is over. Sweet because Andres Sandoval’s is also. Whatever the Boosters paid to get that kid out of Junior College should get a refund (just teasing). Trent Meachem’s transfer hurt this squad. Good Season that could have been Great…

The flyers should be satisfied with the finish of this season. This is one of UD’s better seasons. They don’t make the NCAA tourney that often. They made a nice NIT run. I don’t see how the coach can be on the hotseat. I guess people expect him to take UD to the big dance every year which is an unfair expectation considering UD hardly ever makes it anyway.

The Flyers had a good season! To move up and be a better team they need to be more creative and efficient in their half court offense. If we don’t score in transition and have to set up our offense we struggle big time and our opponents have big runs on us where the game is lost. We need to zone under the opponents basket when they take it out. Every game we get burnt on out of bounds plays! We also need to vary our defenses at times. Show some zone looks when the opponent is on a run!

Dayton, Ohio

UD Coach…Back on the Hot Seat “I wish I could coach this team again, but Ohio State really came to play,” said Dayton coach Brian Gregory,

Are you kidding me, if you would have coached them the second half you would get to coach this team again. Just another microcosm of the season, a coach without adjustments…or should we say a former coach without adjustments.

By John Gresh

March 27, 2008 10:23 AM | Link to this

London Warren singlehandedly cost the Flyers the chance to compete for that game. Gregory’s use of him was not just questionable, but downright stupid. He clearly was overmatched by Butler, couldn’t check him or deal with the pressure. Flail your arms all you want London, but you are not a D1 caliber point guard. Wake up coach. Marcus Johnson was not in that much foul trouble.

Middleman, the fact that you called it an “inbounce play” illustrates your knowledge of the game. You can’t be too critical of a coach when you don’t know basketball terminology yourself.

UD fans should be satisfied with the season and NIT finish.

First off, credit to the Dayton fans (and band) for representing their team well last night. The Schott was definately rocking. Second, Roberts is the real deal, and it’s easy to lose him in the crowd because he’s so short.

That said, Dayton got outplayed and outcoached last night. They had no answer for Koufos all night. Also, once OSU got into a 4 guard set with a few minutes to go in the 1st half, Dayton got shut down offensively and got ripped apart on the other end of the court.

I agree that it is UD that has the arrogance. For crying out loud it is Dayton that will not play a cross town rivalry that would be good for the greater Dayton area. UD and Wright State is a better fit than UD and Ohio State … they are on different levels. Wright State and Dayton try to make the NCAA tourney every once and a while and OSU is trying to win national championships.

Gregory needs to go.

I believe had he not been in the locker room at half time the game would have been a long fought battle between the two teams.

Many coaches enhance their team. Many coaches improve their team. Gregory is neither of these coaches. It seems that his ‘weave’ offense is a flake. And his inability to coach defense against the most fundamental plays like an inbounce play under the basket is a joke. I have and will continue to see better junior high coaches than him.

By Mark

March 27, 2008 9:49 AM | Link to this

I think part of the problem is London Warren and why Brian Gregory keeps putting him in or leaving him in in crucial spots. Yes, he can dribble and play some defense but on the offensive side he is almost useless. Its like having only 4 offensive guys on the floor unless he gets to within 2 feet of the basket and tosses up some wild layup attempt. You would think a point guard on scholarship would be able to shoot a jumper or a 3-pointer.

My complaint is this - with 13 minutes left in the game, UD gave up. 5,000 UD fans drive to the game to support them and that’s the payback. UD, thanks for a solid 1/2 season. Maybe we’ll see you in March in 2-4 years. Next year could be rough.

A disappointing loss for the senior Flyers. Too late for “What ifs”. I want to Thank the team for a great year. The vistory over Pitt, the preseason, the A-10, the A-10 Championship games and the NIT games. You have made it a memorable year that I enjoyed watching. Too little is ever said about the hours you spend and dedication to the game. Go Flyers!

Too many turnovers and overmatched, but still a good season for the Flyers. They fell just a little bit short of having a great season. Hopefully, next year they will move from being a good team to a great team. The Flyers will miss B-Rob, but I like the young core of players they will have. Very athletic and alot of energy. Dayton and OSU should make room on their schedules to play every year. It would be a great series-1,000X better than UD-Wright State!
