Flyer hoops needs shooters; Perry ready to deliver
Thursday, October 02, 2008
DAYTON — With the departure of sweet-shooting Brian Roberts and the 3-point line being extended one foot, the University of Dayton men's basketball team will need as many bombers as it can find this season.
Sixth-year coach Brian Gregory recruited a few players who possess pillow-soft touches, and one of the Flyers' holdovers appears ready to answer the call.
Junior Mickey Perry played sporadically a year ago as a catch-and-shoot specialist. And while the deficiencies elsewhere in his game kept him from locking down a spot in the regular rotation, the Wisconsin transfer has become a better all-around player since last season in Gregory's eyes.
"His consistency has been really good. He sees the things he didn't do well last year, and he's really worked on them," Gregory said. "He's better defensively, better with the ball. He shot the ball extremely well (last season), but now he's able to sustain his effort and concentration."
Gregory, whose team begins practice Oct. 17, pointed out Perry wasn't the only player who made the most of his offseason.
On center Kurt Huelsman: "Kurt has made great strides in maintaining the strength he always plays with but dropping weight (about 20 pounds) so he could move better."
On forward Charles Little: "Charles had the best summer and fall he's ever had. It's very similar to what Jimmy Binnie and Andres Sandoval did before having great senior years (in 2007-08), working on the things the team needed. Charles has really taken a step forward in those things."
On new point guard Rob Lowery: "He's learning our system. He has a good handle on what's important to us, and how we want to play fits him very well."
On sophomore Chris Wright: "He's really made solid improvement in every aspect of his game."
VB team loses star
Senior volleyball player Erin Schroeder will miss the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury against Yale last week.
Shroeder, the Atlantic 10 setter of the year in 2006 and an honorable mention All-American last year, is third on the UD career list with 3,579 assists.
